I have been smoking for going on 18 years. I want to quit and have tried unsuccessfully several times. My hubby wants to quit to and we have set Saturday as our "quit date". Some people have suggested using nicotine gum, but I can't because I have TMJ and it's hard for me to chew gum. I've been hearing about these lozenges, and i want to know if anyone has tried them? Do they taste nasty? What are their drawbacks and plusses? I have it in my mind that I am ready, it's just so hard! Especially when I am alone at my office...

Have you considered the patches. I used the 24 hour patches for a few weeks. They stop the physical craving and allow you to break the habit. Then you slowly wean down the strengths until you are completely free. Half the battle is the willpower and breaking the habit and I think these patches give you the best chance of success. I found the lozenges to be really nasty tasting and made me gag. Do you have a stop smoking clinic you could drop in to and recieve more expert advice? They can be very good and I do believe there are even support groups now for giving up! Good luck and I hope you find a method that suits you. Also please remember if you do relapse don't beat yourself up about it. Just start again the next day... Like the saying goes... practice makes perfect!

Did you have any side effects from the patches? I have heard rumors that they cause nausea, but never really knew anyone that tried them. I hadn't even thought of it. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the idea!! :)

I must be a freak of some kind. The first time I quit...which lasted for 5 years...I had no physical craving for nicotine whatsoever. I just didn't know what to do with my hands. And this time....I have no physical craving....my hands don't shake, I don't have panic pains, I am not irritable....any more than I normally am, that is. I just don't understand why it is that some people suffer from withdrawal. Of course, I only smoked one pack of cigs a day so maybe that was it....although I have smoked for over 50 years.....this last binge for 28 years.

i used to smoke and now i quit for six or five years now. its not ean easy battle but i did. i did it for my kids. i think if you are inspired enough and really ready you can stop smoking. dont eat to much so you wont have to crave to smoke. for the mean time dont go to places were you will see people who are smoking and focus. do something when you feel like you want to smoke, like doing jumping jacks, run of your desire. hope you can quit... its a good idea.

I'm glad to hear someone has benn successful at quiting! I'm going to try my hardest, the money we save would be phenominal, and that's part of the incentive, as well as my kids. Even my 4 year old tells me people die from smoking.

I have lost a lot of family members due to smoke related cancer. And there is absolutely no way I can get my family back. The byproducts of a family member lost to cancer is permanent, irreversible. I would suggest finding a picture of a diseased lung, or a picture of a person who is doomed to live there life out with one of those portable oxygen tanks...and keep it with you and post it everywhere while you are trying to quit. I think visual reminders are quite effective...Good Luck and I hope you succeed...SS

I'm sorry for your losses. Unfortunately I already did hang pictures of a dirty lung all over the place, it didn't work for me. It is a great idea though.

I stopped smoking about 6 weeks ago,I had been smoking for 48 years and I am now 62. I am using the inhalater as I thought I would miss having something in my hands while sitting at the computer.I can honestly say it has been so much easier than I expected as I expected real torture.I do think there is a right time or a right reason to do it at a certain time,my mother had part of her lung removed over 10 years ago but even that didn't stop me smoking.I may say my mother recovered completely and is now 87 but she had smoked for over 60 years.Good luck.

I know it may sound harsh but the best method for me was strictly "COLD TURKEY". Smoking is one of those things that the smoker themself has to be truly ready to stop. I could never quit for my wife, my kids or anyone else. As noble as it might be, ultimately you have to quit for yourself. I smoked for almost 20 years and quit for periods ranging from 2 months to 5 years on numerous occasions. Tried everything but I think cold turkey eliminates the habit from your lifestyle. If you take pills or use patches, you are still thinking about smoking all the time. Just survive the first three days and it gets easier after that. I'm not even touching on the health issues, my brother has throat cancer that they say was directly caused by smoking (No, I did'nt have that as a reason to quit, I had already quit years before he found out). Just keep trying, there is no failing here, just a lack of trying. Good Luck!

I quit about 5 years ago. I used SmokeAway.com. They are herbs and they really worked. Once I took them I lost most of my urges to smoke. You can order them right off the website. I still can't actually believe that I quit. Good luck to you. It is a very hard habit to break.

Giving up smoking is excellent decision and it is good for health and health is more than wealth. If you want to quit smoke for ever it will take few days. Whenever you smoke, instead of smoking you eat something like snacks or any eatables which are good for health lightly. You reduce smoking day by day. After few days, you will be able to quit smoking completely.

Picking a date was exactly how I quit over a year ago. And I got the idea from someone else who had quit five years prior. It seems to work! I've tried cutting back, and it never worked. I tried switching to ultra lights, and I started ripping off the filters. The only way that has worked for me has been to pick a date.
