Hi I write poems and short stories and have been writing articles for Associated Content but they don't pay for poems or short stories. I have heard really good things about lulu.com but I don't know if I have the time to make a book of poems myself but I'm still going to look into them. What I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions besides lulu.com for places that pay really good for poems and short stories. I know I could do a search on Google or something to find a few places but I wanted to ask the members on here so I could get a good recommendation. I have a good bit of poems that I would like to submit for payment and about 4 short stories so far. My stories need a little more work done but that's no big deal. Thanks in advance to everyone who replies. :)

you can submit at www.poetry.com but in order to get money you have to go to a convention and read your poem, Im not sure if they pay for your traveling or not, so its not really the best site unless that convention thing doesnt bother you.
But I'd like to know of some good sites too! So i'll be watching this discussion! lol

Yeah I submitted to them a couple of times before because I was entering the poetry contest. I was hoping to win the $10,000 prize but didn't happen. I did get published on their site and they also published me in one of their books and wanted me to buy the book but they wanted too much for it. I can't remember how much they wanted but I couldn't afford it at the time. I was invited to their convention but I can't stand being in crowds of people and I couldn't have read my poem in front of all of those people so I didn't go. Their site is ok but I am hoping to find a site that actually pays you for each submission. Thanks for responding. :)

Yes I know I found that out the hard way. I submitted a poem for a contest and obviously I didn't win but I was published in their book, so they said. All they wanted was for me to buy the book! I will never submit another poem on their ever again. :)

Tickled By Thunder is a good place to submit poetry to. If you win their contests, you can be paid around 75.00-150.00 per page of poetry. TBT was listed as one of fiction's top 50.

Like I told the last responder, I'm not really looking for contests but thanks for letting me know. I might check them out anyway and the site the last responder told me about. Thanks for responding. :)

I went to the library and looked at Writer's Market. I looked in the section under LITERARY MAGAZINES. These are magazines that publish mostly short stories, poems, book reviews, and some articles, as well as artwork. I have submitted two short stories to two different Canadian literary magazines and am waiting to hear back (only sent them last week).
I struggled for a long time trying to find a place that would pay me to publish my short stories and poems and this is the only answer I could come up with. Good luck!

I wasn't really wanting to submit them to magazines unless they are online magazines. I was hoping to submit them online. Thanks for your response and good luck to you also. :)

I wouldn't suggest poetry.com because more than likely they'll ask you for money. I've entered their poetry contests and all I received in return was a bunch of spam in my inbox.
About lulu, it's a great place to publicize your work but if it's a poem, try to collect as many as you can and create a book of poems. You can definitely create an e-book for a short story. I've asked a question about that here on mylot and received positive responses from everyone. I wrote a 3-page short story and sold it for $1.00 on lulu. I'm in the beginning process so no one has bought the e-book yet but they make your cover look professional and it's easy way to get it published rather than go through several different publishers mailing them your material.

Yeah like I said I have heard quite a few good things about lulu.com and I am definitely going to check them out. I already have a collection of poems but I don't have time to create a book unless they make it easy on there. My short stories are much longer than 3 pages so I'm hoping for more than $1.00. If they try to only pay me $1.00 for my longer short stories then there is no way I will go with them. I definitely don't want to send them to different publishers either. Like I told the first responder I have entered poetry.coms contests before and their ok but I won't go with them again. Like you said all they do is try to get you to buy a book or something. I'm already planning on checking out lulu.com but was hoping someone had other good sites I could look into also. Thanks for responding. :)

Winningwriters.com has a database you can access for a small fee (seems like it $10 or something) which has lots of contests that you can enter poetry into. They rate each contest for you so that you know which ones are good and which are not. They even list some short stories contests as well.

I'm not really interested in contests right now. I want something that is going to pay me out right for my stuff without having to compete for it. I am probably going to have to go with lulu.com but I don't have time right now to make a book to submit to them. I wish there was a site where you could submit poems individually and get paid for each one. Something like Associated Content where you write articles and submit them and they pay you for each one. They don't pay for poems or short stories though. A friend of mine who referred me to another article writing site said she saw some poems go for payment on Constant Content so if I can't find anything else I am going to try them. I am still going to look for other places though. Thanks for your suggestion though and for responding also. :)
