Do you remember that song, "The Greatest Love of All" revived in the '90s by pop singer Whitney Houston? That song became a hit. Soulful rendition, sentimental tune, stirring lyrics. And it has a line that says "Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all".
What a philosophy! But I have a feeling that not all will agree that the greatest love of all is the love for oneself! There is no greatest love, someone said, than to lay down one's life for his friends. However, there's still a bit of truth in that song. We must learn to love ourselves.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not advocating hedonism, the belief that we are to live mainly to please ourselves and gratify our desires, whether they're destructive or constructive. I'm not encouraging you to be self-centered, conceited or vain. What I'm saying is, we need to have a positive opinion of ourselves. Loving oneself means having a proper self-esteem which has something to do with the way you regard yourself. Put differently, its like facing a mirror, seeing your own reflection, and asking, "Do I like that person in the mirror?" And you confidently answer, "Yes I Do."
Unfortunately, not too many people like the person they see in the mirror. Some see an ugly girl, a useless son, or a mediocre student. How about you? Do you like the person you see in the mirror? Do you have a high self-esteem?
