chatting on internet

what are so many people doing on chatrooms on the internet ? in real life , atleast one can see the person , share expressions and hear the laughter . chatting with person you know is ok . but chatting with strangers !

i don't chat with strangers but I can understand that some people just need to pass the time and do useless things.. still the can gain some knowledge and learn about other countries and cultures, etc
