A virtual private network extranet is a network that uses public networks and their protocols to send sensitive data to partners, customers, suppliers and employees by using a system called “tunneling” or “encapsulation”. Tunnels are private passage through the public internet that provides secure transmission from one extranet partner to another. A VPN provides security shells with the most sensitive data under the tightest control. VPN scales well and is quite inexpensive. Most Extranets are implemented as LAN to LAN extranets or client/server extranets. VPN establish short term logical connection in real time that is broken once the communication session ends
