Depression a genetic thing or an environmental thing?

I don't care what the research has proven about this. I want to know your opinion. My wife's entire family is on some sort of depression medication for anger management, bi-polar, severe depression, or antipsychotic. My wife gets very circumstantial depression (meaning when there is a reason to get depressed she goes into an extreme form.) My family has no diagnosed depression and I have shown no signs of the symptoms. On very small scale (biased) research you would think it was genetic. What if it's just environmental? If it is genetic or environmental, do you think we can prevent it from spreading into our two kids?

no,never it's obsolutele wrong of spreading our depression into our kids.i think it's not genetic, it's just because of the environment we live in.whenever we are depressed, we should calmly analyse the problem & try to find our fault. you can share it with your friends. never spoil your relationship by showing your depression on others

I can honestly say in my case it's both. Both of my parents are depressed. I at one point in my life was severely depressed. Due to the environment I was living in and the lifestyle I was living as a young 20 something I remained depressed until my mid 20's. I have long since put depression behind me thanks to removing myself from the environment but it still lingers in the recess of my mind...thanks to my mom and dad. Chemical imbalances unfortunatly can be inherited and they are the major physical causes of depression.

I agree that some people may be genetically predisposed but I don't really believe that depression itself is genetic. I just think that depression is one of several manifestations that are possible from genetic chemical inbalances.

some kinds of depressions might be genetic but there are various reasons for falling into a depression.

i would say that its a combination of both. maybe all of us have some form of depression but it is trigger by our environment just like some said here. in your wife's case, she will feel the depression if something happened, for a reason. maybe some people dont take it seriously that's why they dont tend for medication because they can handle depression. well if its environmental, the first thing that you must do as parents especially the mothers out there who are pregnant, keep happy thoughts because you unconsciously pass your thoughts, feelings to your child inside your womb. remember children always act according to what they see, so be a good example to your children, let them see that you enjoy life and that you can handle pressure and problems.

i believe majority of the causes for depression are environmental & emotional experiences . there would only be so lesser reason of a genetical or by bi-polar causes . if most of the family members have such problem then there should be something wrong from genes or even on how they deal with each other . the best awareness & prevention is to see a doctor ; psychologist or whoever be the most important person to answer such concerns .

depression is overloading the mind with multiple thoughts or pressures, that the mind or brain cannot able to withstand..so we burst out in depression and tension

depression is really very bad. some people appear to be genetically predisposed to developing severe depression but researchers are yet to pin down the genes responsible . no single gene is responsible for depression infact multiple genes are probable interacting to create what amounts to a genetic baseline levels of risk.on top of that beaseline , environmental factors are likely mixed in as well, things such as non-genetic physiological problems or physcological traumas. i dont think depression is entirely genetic , by any means but there important genetic factors.i donno too much about the genetic aspect of it but what so little i know is this what i wrote. depression is not something from which you can just "snap out ".i think its caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals along with other factors like any other medical condition , depression needs to be treated.it can make u feel hopeless and helpless. i think that there is a great deal of research documenting that children of depressed parents are at high risk for depression themselves.many studies have found that depressed mothers have difficulty bonding with their infants.they are less sensitive to their baby's needs.then obviously, those appear more isolated and unhappy them the oters.when such children reach their toddler stage they are very difficult to handle. they are defiant and negative in their opinion and views and generally refuse to parent's opinion.

For your case i think its both, since your wife grew up with her family whos currently being medicated, it is both environmental and genetic- environmental because she was surrounded with people who are under this medication and genetic because its her family. I think one thing you can do to at least lessen the chances of your kids having the same problem is to probably live seperately from your wifes family? its just a thought though, that way your kids wont be exposed to such things... maybe this will also help your wife too.

Ya,I am sure you can if you want to do it.I think depression is an environmental thing. If your family not live under the depression then I think which is really a good environment for them. They will never know what the depression is.

I get angered. Earlier, when my periods are getting closer (maybe one or two days before) I cannot control my anger. I verbally abuse any one near me. My husband, My mother, now even my children. Nobody in my family is getting angered like this. I know this problem is only in me. I haven't seek any medical advise. I think nobody in my family cares about it since I shout at them but I am not physically violent. My brothers are so level headed. Now recently I have noticed I am getting easily angry all the time. I know it reflects a bad image on me. But there is no way I can control myself. Now I feel like harming myself sometime. I really thankful to mylot for getting an opportunity to express myself in this way. I think depression is situation which can arise on some people. maybe with people who has a weak personality.

More to do with environmental stress. Because of the hectic situations oe has to face and the frustrations one has to go through really freaks out a few people. Try meditating, going to the movies, learning new stuff and learning to live happily by seeing the positive side of life.

yes depression does have a genetic reason it is better or worse according to environment . i mean to say if the environment is like inducing it it can increase or attacks can be frquent . if helps like yoga and pranayam(meditations) done it will be better.so it is to be managed and then environment plays an important role.environment includes people around u.

I believe it is a combination of the two. I think it is genetic and some people are more susceptible to it than others. I think it could lie dormant in your system and jusyt be waiting for an event to trigger it off. I think it is such a random process the medical proffession would be unlikely to say it was genetic as it would possibly start a huge panic, in those families were it is common. I was told my psioriasis was not genetic many years ago, even though every femal member of my family had it as far back as we can trace it. I believe the opinion has now changed and the medical proffession have also agreed. What in medical opinion is truth today will be pure fantasy in 10 years time.

in my words depression is an environmental thing. it comes only when there is a sudden change in the behaviour of the surroundings.these changes as a human we cant accept them and start thinking about them deeply and then finally get depressed

According to some phsychiatrist it is mixture of genetic and environmental but gen has lower influence even gen is not determined by it's blood and descent but it is becaused we live near or at depression environment from perhaps when we still in mother's pregnancy, so we tends to think it is environmental. No need for you to spread your two of kids but we have to be able to CHANGE our environmnet habit, caracter etc, we, our husband/wife and whoever live with us to NEW way. No more sevire anger, and so on.

Really I can't say whether it's genetic or not. Myself and my sister suffer from Depression and so does my mother, but we're adopted and so none of us share any blood ties with the other. My depression was at first thought to be Seasonal Affective Disorder, till a doctor finally realized that my symptoms didn't disappear in the spring and summer. I was told I needed Anti depressants to which I replied No thanks. If it's genetic, then I'd say yes, it can definitely be passed on to your kids, without a doubt, and I'm keeping an eye on my kids already in case they inherited that gene. The following link offers up some interesting information about depression and its causes. http://www.healthyplace.com/Communities/depression/causes.asp

Depression comes from a person heart. Whenever there is no hope in aheart of a person it is likely that the person will depress, sad without any reason. To get the 'hope' you have to have faith!

For me, I think its thru genetic. Its already encoded thru your genes, You cant prevent it. I dont know if there were researches conducted regardling on this matter.

per my observation its is both genetic and environment. if there's a family background then it is hereditary and at the same time cause by environment. depression is also developed, somewhat psychological in nature. we tend to make little simple problems so big and complicated. it can be cured of course, there's alot of medicine but i think the best medicine is ourselves. our cooperation to cure / solve such problem is a great help.
