I had a friend when I was growing up that had been bitten by a Chow when he was a baby. His face was pretty badly scarred. I have heard that Chow's are not good around kids. I have a daughter, but are Chow's a bad idea for this? Or is the bad reputation simpily that...a bad rap? Please help?

Chows are one of the breeds more likely to bite. And in the case of children, they tend to bite them on the head and back of the neck.
I was an ER doc for over 10 years.
I'd hold off on any breed of dog while your child is very small. It's better to teach them about animals when they're truly old enough to understand.
Another option is constant--and I do mean constant--supervision. Dog and child are never out of your sight. I know this might seem extreme, but I've caught my nearly 5 year old granddaughter trying to step on one of my dogs' tail, she's been around animals all her life. They really just do not get the idea at this age.
