Paddy? Why not Patty?

This is pretty trivial, but I've always wondered why Paddy, the nickname for Patrick, is spelled with "dd" instead of "tt". Is it because Patty is short for Patricia? Pat is usually the same whether it's short for one or the other. Any ideas?

That's because it's short for Padrick, the Irish version of Patrick. Patrick is the English version So Paddy is short for Padrick. It confuses a lot of people and you aren't alone in that one.
