Retiring from the road-When should seniors stop driving?

About 12 years ago,my then 80 year-old father-in law gave up his driver's license after many discussions about his safety with family members and eventually his doctor. This was after an accident he had while driving when he blacked out and drove his car into a ditch!! How old do you think is too old to safely drive a vehicle? I checked with the DMV system in my state of Oregon to see what programs that were in place to address older drivers. In Oregon, drivers are required to take a vision test every 8 years after the age of 50. Drivers are required to have a visual acuity of 20/70 in both eyes in order to obtain a renewal for a driver's license. Another program I noticed is an at risk driver program that allows police officers, doctors and family members to report to notify the DMV of a person's medical condition or cognitive ability that may impair one's ability to drive safely. Are you aware of the DMV regulations where you live concerning older drivers? Do you think this is enough to prevent seniors from getting behind the wheel who may be at risk drivers? Do you think that seniors in their 70's and 80's can continue to drive safely?

i suppose that older people can still drive up until any ages as long as they pass their eyesight and good health conditions test. that is a really good idea for drivers over the age of 50 to have a visual test every 8 years
