Does spanking a child really work?

Most of the time children are spanked when they do something wrong. Usually by their parents or some other adult in authority who is annoyed or angry with the child for something the child did. So my questions: 1)Is the person doing the spanking really doing it for the benefit of the child or to relieve their own anger and frustration? 2)Does the child come away with anything other than bruises and fear?
