We have just replaced our matress, the one we had before was very good quality but was about 20 years old. I was waking up with backache every day so it was time to change. We have bought a good quality one again with memory foam and what a difference it has made, no more backache and a good nights sleep.
We got it a a knock down price, and even got more knocked off, I think he was desperate for a sale, but we still paid £700 ($1400) for that. It was a long way from being the most in that store with some as much as £2000 ($4000).
As soon as the backache returns I shall be out there buying a new matress again.

Yes i have heard that you should really change these every couple years. I agree with you they are expensive. I couldnt even tell you how old mine is. But it does help to change them, the one before this i had for a real long time and it got to the point that i would get out of bed and my feet and back were screwed up from it. My back was so sore from having a old mattress.
