Life on Mars Lyrics

Bowie's Life on Mars ranks as one of the best songs I've ever heard. The melody and lyrics are fantastic, however I've never been able to work out what the song is about (if anything). Does anyone have any ideas regarding the theme of the song? Arkad The Richest Man in Atherstone

it's not about life on other planets but about a girl being forced to leave her home to see a film, which she doesn't want to see because the plot is too similar to events in her real life.
