I have a 3 year old that potty trained but I have child #2 due in June that I am planning on cloth diapering. I started cding my first child when she was about a year so I have never cloth diapered a newborn. Any suggestions on what you liked best? AIO's, prefolds, pockets, fitteds?

I have a lot of respect for you. I would never use cloth diapers~ they gross me out. I used to babysit a baby who was in cloth diapers and I purchased the disposable ones for when she was at my house. All I can remember was the mom had to use a lot of vasoline on the babys bottom when she used the cloth diapers.

Why vasoline? I've cloth diapered both of my children and have never once used vasoline on them. Almost all of my friends cloth diaper as well and no one ever has heard of using vasoline. That could ruin a diaper! And personally, I switched to cloth to avoid all the dangerous chemicals in dispossible diapers. If I were using a sitter who put spossies on my child behind my back she would be fired ASAP.

I feel the same as the other lady. I prefer cloth for many reasons. I hate the thought of those disosibles sitting in our land fills for over a hundred years. And all the chemicals that are in those things. If you knew all the chemicals you would think twice. My daughter was allergic to those chemicals and had many open sore rashes. So bad that if I even put water on them she would scream from the pain. I finally found cloth and she cleared up right away. I like cloth diapering. I know it's pure fabric with no chemicals against my child. Everything changes once you have kids of your own. You do what you think is best for them. :)

I use cloth diapers. I did for my oldest until he potty trained and now on my youngest. Ther eis nothing gross or difficult about them. :) For a newborn that poops and pees a lot I would suggest getting some prefolds and covers. When they start spacing out you can try a few other things. For me I like AIOs and pockets for nighttime use and I stick with fitteds and prefolds during the day.

I've got prefolds on order through a co-op and have been buying pockets and fitteds. I've already stocked up on covers. I've been trying to get wool covers though so it's more breathable. Do you hang out at any of the cloth diaper forums? I think a cloth diaper is so cute! I used to love seeing my daughter in cloth diapers. It was the only way I could keep her pants up! She is so tall and thin that her pants don't fit her. I needed the extra bulk. hehehe!

I diapered my son with cloth diapers. Now, mind you, this was 32 years ago, and disposable diapers were a new thing then, but they were available. I had a diaper service, though, that my grandmother paid for me to have when Jesse was born, and the smell of those newly delivered diapers was heavenly. I got 100 prefitted diapers delivered twice a week at first, and as he grew, the delivery changed to 50 diapers twice a week. About the time he turned a year old, the delivery changed to 30 diapers and 30 pairs of training pants twice a week. It was so convenient, and I really appreciated having the service. I'm not sure how much that kind of service would cost today, but knowing what my stepson spends on disposables, it can't be that much more expensive.

I started with AI1 but know I really like prefolds and fitteds. I feel that you can get them cleaner than the AI1. A great website is diaperswappers.com. you can buy used diapers and figure out what works best for you.

If you are having a newborn, and are crafty I would suggest making your own tiny dipes. If not then definitely go with prefolds especially in June. As many times as you will change a newborn you will want to use something that can take a lot of washings. And since they pee a little you probably wouldin't even need a cover at home. Good luck. I love pf's even on my 16 month old.
