food related memories

Do you have a vivid food-related memory? I do. I remember making tamales with my grandmother when I was very young. She used her big stand mixer to whip the lard, then added the masa, and then after a while we were ready to start making the tamales. I remember her showing me how much masa to put in each husk before you put the filling in, and then teaching me how to fold it so no filling peaked out. I also remember the huge pot they got cooked in -- it was a hideous avacado green with flowers on the lid. The handles were black. She makes them every year, in red and green (green is extra spicy) and she always saves some masa and makes me sweet ones with coconut and raisins (and no filling -- it would be weird to have meat in there, too). So now, I'd like to hear your food-memories! Do you remember how the food smelled, or how you made it, or watching others make it? Do you remember tasting a certain food for the first time? I hope this thread helps us to remember our families and our past!

One of my best food related memories is the Sunday Roast. We usually invited my Grandmother for this. A huge leg of Lamb would be cooked, plus roast potatoes, carrots & pumpkin. Sometimes we had peas. We always had gravy. Then we would have desert. This could be apple pie or chocolate cake. If cream was required, my Grandmother always had a generous serving. We very rarely cancelled the Sunday roast, even if it was one of those regular over 40 degrees days. No wonder many in my family had or still have, weight problems.

I've never had a roast with pumpkin... I'll try it in the autumn. I'm always looking for a way to eat more of it since pumpkin is really good for you. Aren't sunday dinners a great way to gather family?

Oh I love tamales! I remember watching my great-grandma, grandma, and mom make thanksgiving dinner. I love to watch them cooking and joking around. I also loved the smells on thanksgiving.
