Should a Christian only listen to Christian music?

I gave up secular music about six months ago. I now only listen to Comtemporary Christian and Southern Gospel music. Occasionaly I miss secular music, but I've heard several preachers state that it is wrong to listen to it. I will say that I've felt more uplifted since I've been listening to Christian music.

I urge you to listen to the song Everybody Hurts by R.E.M a great secular song with a wonderful message. Not every secular song is unfit to listen to. I really think you have to use your sound mind to what kind of music you should listen to. There is a song called Why should the devil have all the good music? There is a lot of good music around that cannot be classified as christian but certainly will not destroy your belief.

You need to ask yourself "Where in the Bible is 'Christian music' defined?" No where. The thing is God gave talents and musical gifts to many people to entertain us with. Some of them don't use it appropriately but that is their downfall. Eliminating the obviously inappropriate and offensive secular music, there are many quality secular songs. "Christian music" may feel more uplifting because the message is more obvious, but you can find positive messages in secular music also. If you have the mind set that all music is a gift from God, you can feel uplifted by anything.

I had never thought of it that way. Thank you for your thoughts. You're right. All music is a gift from God.

What Christian music do you enjoy - specifically which groups or performers?

Oh, I love the Newsboy, Kutless, Switchfoot. So I guess it's that rock n' roll that makes my heart beat.

We have ears and cannot avoid hearing any kind of sound and that is including any kind of music. There's no prohibition. But in worship services, we in the congregations of the Church of Christ sing only Acapella songs as they are also the fruits of the lips and so we do not use musical instruments during worship services.

Yeah, that is kind of a tricky question to answer. I was wondering if we aren't familiar with secular music how do we reach the kids who are listening to it? Know what I mean?

I don't think it is wrong to listen to secular music, but I agree that the Christian music is more uplifting. For that reason, I only listen to Christian. It is what you want to allow into your mind and what influences you allow in your life. But to say it is wrong...I couldn't say that. There is some very uplifting secular music out there. But when listening to a secular station, you just have to sift through all the garbage to get to it.

You have to follow your own heart and beliefs. There are as many opinions on ALL kinds of music as there are people in the world. Find the musical niche(s) that work for you and abide by that.
