Is Hockey Too Violent?

The old addage "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out..." seems laughable, but has not been truer than lately...a couple of years ago a player got suspended for a year because of injuries he caused to an opposing player. More recently, a player from the Toronto Maple Leafs was injured and out for a number of games due to injuries instilled from another player...and these are just the ones of note...
More often than not and at least once during any given game, there is at least some sort of brawl that breaks out...
Thoughts?
What about hockey at a lower level, such as Junior A? Is it the same?

here's what I trully don't understand..there are fights in other sports..but I trully don't understand all the fighting in hockey..I don't watch it for the game, I watch it to see someone catch a beatdown..lol..I don't understand how football is way more physical than hockey, but they don't break into fights every few seconds..I don't get it...
