Advice? Sudden strong cough+blocked nose / myLot

Last night saw a weird experience for me. I awoke about 1am, with a huge violent cough. Over a few minutes, my nose blocked and I became very short of breath. It was a sudden and energetic cough, a rib buster, if you will. The whole thing lasted about an hour, even with a few drinks of a soft drink at my bedside, until I got up and walked around a bit. Previous to the waking up i've had no health troubles or flu symptoms for some time. Generally fit and active, the strep that I had a couple of months ago cleared up some weeks back. I would say the cough was similar to that, but more forceful. Anyone know what could have triggered such a thing ?

a cold or the flu could come on that fast i think, take some over the counter stuff for it and if you are still out of breath, go get medical help. (skip the soft drinks, drink hot tea)

Thanks cher :) About the weirdest part is that it's all pretty much cleared up now - hence my wondering about all this. I have a slightly dry throat, but that's it and probably caused by the cough in any case. My nose is fine, no problems at all.
