Oil Changes

I know that most people say you need to get an oil change for your car every 3 months or every 3,000 miles whichever comes first. But what do you say when the person who is supposed to do this tells you that you dont need one? I have a 2007 Camry that I took in for an oil change. The man came back with the dip stick in his hand and said that the oil was still clear and I didn't need one. Should I insist that it be done or bring it back later?

If you haven't put 3,000 miles on your car you don't have to waste your money. 3 months is what they estimate and figure when you should have driven about 3,000 miles. If you are unsure insist on getting the oil and filter changed. Take care Kowgirl.

I have run vehicals commercially most of my adult life. Unless your vehical is spending a lot of time at idle, 3000 miles is more often than oil needs to be changed. I change my oil every 5000 miles and it does not concern me in the least. Nor have I had any premature engine failure. As to waiting until the oil looks "dirty" before changing it, that is not such a good idea. Modern engines burn so clean that the carbon and soot which turns the oil black just is not generated in the quantities it once was. The additives in the oil which help give extra protection will be depleted before the oil turns black. So, change that oil every 3000, 5000, or even 7000 miles if you are using a long life oil and doing mostly freeway driving. I would not listen to the guy who said you did not need an oil change. You are the customer. If he does not want to listen to you, go to another place for your oil change.

If the oil change is free and comes with the purchase of the car, then you are entitled to it. If it was the dealership who sold you the car telling you that, then they just might be trying to save themselves the expense. If on the other hand, you had to pay for it yourself, the person may have been trying to save you money. It all depends which way it was.

I think he was telling me the truth because I took it to another Toyota dealer and he said the consistency of the oil was still where it should be and the other person was right, I didn't need it but he would do it if I wanted him to.
