Savings At The Grocery Store. It Can Be Done.

Our normal two-week trip to the grocery store was yesterday. I finally convinced my husband I could keep our grocery bill under $100.00 for two weeks. He ended up being very impressed that I achieved my goal. I always make a two-week menu. My grocery list is made from the menu. I rarely stray from the grocery list. I bought many items that were store brand items, but sometimes you have to be careful and watch the store brand price. I found a 1-pound bag of Tortilla Chips, an off brand for $.88. When we got to the register it was rung up as #1.25. (I also watch the prices on the readout). I corrected the cashier immediately. I also found store brand catsup. It was $.86 compared to the on sale brand for #1.39. Same size. The point is, I got our of the grocery store yesterday with a total bill for two weeks for two people, including snacks and a cake mix for $97.83. I even impressed myself. How do you save money at the grocery store? Any tips or tricks?

Well I'm a poor college student with a mini fridge. So I have to stick to soups and noodles..rice..I shop for me and my fiance and I try to keep it under 50.00 for a months worth of food. Basically, because I have some meals on my card for the cafeteria..and while the food is gross and fattening the school made me get one (all freshmans need one) for 1500 dollars! I can't waste all that money. I need to save more money though so I'm going to try to stretch it to 30.00 a month. A 1.00 a day for food.

I'll leave all the groceries shopping to my wife. She exactly knows where to get cheap grocery shopping and she also can remember the price and compare it to others. She saves a lot for me, we don't always buy the famous branded item and instead we stick to generic brand and that's already more than good enough. We saved hundreds every month as a result. Both of us were impressed.

I bet she enjoys it too. Do you ever go with her? If you come up with any extra tips I'm sure everyone here would like to know them.

I am with you. I love to save money at the grocery store. We are always cutting out coupons and using them. YOu would be surprised how much money that saves you. The grocery store we shop at has card you use to save money on their products. We also buy non-name brand items. That does save a lot of money. We also buy in bulk and that saves some money too.

It's good to have an option of where you shop. We don't have the option in the little place we live. Good Work!.

many of us found shopping list is of no use. i can hardly keep myself from buying things out of the shopping list. so what i normally do is whenever i go ut shopping, i don't use the shopping basket or trolley. i only buy whatever things i can hold with my two hands. i made a mental shopping list (only the most important things to buy) before i go out. that saves a lot!

I bet it does save a lot faraza, but does that mean you take a lot of trips to the grocery? Your grocery bill must be really low?

We've been trying to keep our bill under $120 for the month. We don't eat very much meat, and except for milk and veggies, everything in our grocery store goes on sale eventually.

It's hard isn't it cutepenguin. With the cost of groceries rising higher each visti, there has to be a better way, but I haven't found it yet. Keep up the good work.

here in Holland we hardly have coupons! but when we have, i use them! in the grocerystore the wellknown brands are always in sight, the nonbrands always below, so you have to watch down to find the cheap prizes! and sometimes they offer big packages for "lower"prizes but if you do a count for one piece, the smaller package is cheaper! and ofcourse always make a list with the things you need, and don't buy more!

Holland, Wow. The world at our fingetips jolanda. Stores always put the name brands higher or lower. It makes people look harder but looking for the bargains is sure better than a high grocer bill.

Ouch is right. Dang! No wonder you work so hard at everything you do. That's what it takes I guess. Burning candles at both ends.

Ho Terilee. I am like you on a very limited budget, and when I grocery shop, I buy mostly from the out side walls. in other words fresh stuff I cook from scratch where possible, but there are instances where it is far more practical to buy mixes like you did with the cake mix, I do not use white flour and baking powder enough to keep in my cupboard, I patronize the bulk department a lot. I buy soup base and make my own soup. Like yesterday I mad 100 won ton and froze them now any time I am in the mood for soup I just grab 6 and use beef or chicken soup base and sesame oil and I have the best won ton soup. I also make my own chili from scratch, I have a slow cooker and I just fill it with ground beef, dried beans tomatoes and spices let cook 12-18 hours and have a great supper, as well as a bag or 2 for the freezer. Right now my freezer is half full of stuff I have prepared in bulk and the half is bulk meat and bread , all nicely portioned, So I have real good meals(too good) all the time .It can be done you just have to be willing to work at it, and buy, bulk, make things from scratch. Oh yes the chili I was talking about, I do not just eat it as chili, I have chili salads, burritos, etc.

I have a freezer too, and it's full. I save all my butter containers and fill them up with left overs or, they are just the right size for a meal for 2 people, at least the way we eat. I keep a sharpie in the kitchen drawer and mark the latest thing inside the container and a date. When the lids get too marked up, I use the sides, or throw them away and opt for a new container. Seems we always have extra containers. I cook things up ahead too. Saves time as well. Old School I guess.

We usually spend round about $60 a week dor the two of us and three kids. I've found that store brand names taste exactly the same as the big brand names and they cost half the price. We do keep an eye on the register too, because the store we shop at has a nasty habit of not making sure the prices are correctly labeled, and so our Bill has been bigger than we expected before now.

Keeping an eye on the register is one of my favorite things. I catch the cashier many times. I know it's not her fault. It's the people who add the information into the computer. It's not much but every penny adds up.

To me I save money by getting things on sale. Or I use a saving card. And I get the one with the most product and the cheapest. I also use coupons. Congratulation terilee79720 for reaching your goal.

Well, i'm kinda fussy about some foods but usually i go to the butcher for our meats coz they're always fresher & cheaper than the supermarket. I have a tendancy to buy a lot of instant noodles, my partner likes them for work & i like them for lunch too! I buy my breads from the bakery coz they're usually around $1 cheaper per loaf & i know they're fresh made daily coz i used to work there :) My pet food i make myself - i get cheap veggies & cheap pasta for them & get meat scraps from the butcher - i cook it all & it can be frozen - it's much cheaper than buying dry food & tins all the time! As for my daughter - she eats mostly what we do - which is a huge relief!

What my family does is plan menu's for the week and then buy groceries based on what we need instead of going to the store with no idea in mind and then buying whatever we want off the shelves. We also tend to use items in season, as we all know that'll cut costs a bit. I'm from the Philippines and imported goods cost quite a bit more, so we try to purchase local goods instead.

I'll bet you have some great recipes to share with us. I'd like to know some of the locally grown things you have that we don't have and probably can't get in the US.
