Joining the Gym

March 17, 2007 6:11pm CST
Hi all Today was the first time ive had the experience of being in a gym on my own. I have cerebral palsy (not in wheelchair), depression and OCD. It was a real worry getting myself motivated. I go to a mens group on a Monday at the day hospital where we try a whole range of things from bowling to go-karting. Last month we were introduced to the local gym and I loved it. The last few weeks ive been going to the body ballacing class and doing 15-20 of gym time(bike and treadmill so far - no weights yet). They are really nice but I keep having doubts I'll get the exercises wrong? What if I do damage to myself? What if I look daft?. I really felt the benifit of my workout today. What are all your experinces of gyms? Was it a good/bad one?

I don't know about gyms but I felt the same at the physical therapy rehab nursing home and I had to do all sorts of gymnastic type excercises to be able to walk again. I realized nobody cared if I was doing anything wrong. Just keep on thinking of the benefits that will result from what your doing and if anyone does make you feel self consious then to hell with them . It's how you feel about yourself that counts. Good luck!

Hey Ross Stop worrying Sweety about getting it wrong, and do not worry about looking Daft You do need to be careful that you do not damage yourself yes, but your Body will tell you if you are overdoing. You keep going there and if you can feel the Benefit then you are doing good. As for looking daft well I hope you never see me in a Gym lol. With my Illness I would be able to do half an exercise and then you can call an Ambulance lol. No Sweet never worry about looking Daft I tell my Daughter the same. She is thinking of joining one but like you she is very shy and concious of herself. Keep going and make sure to show me your Muscles on your Arms whenthey are there Hugs to you xx

Good for you Ross! Don't worry what you look like none of us look cool when we're exercising - or we're not doing it right!!!! Listen to your body , it'll tell you if you are doing too much! Accept the help of the staff if you are struggling or just need a bit of advice! I used to love going to the gym - don't laugh, I know I've put on a lot of weight now, but I used to feel so good after going! Just you enjoy yourself sweetheart and as long as it makes you feel good where's the harm? Be looking out for the muscles as you go past the house!!!!

Ross...Don't worry about looking daft cause you're there for you not anybody else..and everybody is worried about looking daft too...lol.. I took different classes in gyms at the local colleges but not for a few years.I always liked the work out but felt guiltly because I should be using that energy on things that needed to be done. My neice has cp also not in wheelchair. She has had to take 2 steps for every step of the 'normal' person. She's incrediable! Hugs Ross

I have in the past joined a gym...it is intimadating, especially if you are unfamiliar. I have a son who has ocd anxiety deppresion and some other conditions and when it comes to new experiences and crowds he is so shy and scared of the unknown. I want to commend you on such a brave move...I can to some degree understand how getting motivated would be a challenge for you. Good for you! It's a challenge for most of us. I hope you don't mind me asking but do you have any anxiety disorder as well? You can tell me to mind my own buisness.

dont worry about it and take each day as it goes and take it easy and only do what your body can handle. i dont go to the gym as i live in the middle of the bush and the closest gym is about 100 ks away from here. i use to go to gym sometimes when i lived in town but i didnt really like it that much. i just did my home exercises

First day at Gymnasium is eaxctly the same for almost everybody as it were for you! People are very excited, they love the environment around, are pleased to see the others who have developed some muscles and feel really glad on seeing all those body building machines! I too had the same feelings of excitement and enthusiasm like what I have written of. I was too pleased to see guys with heavy muscles and literally, started imagining as how I would look after I gain some muscles. Everything went well for about a month, but then slowly, I started loosing interest towards building muscles due to my busy schedule. I would suggest you to be regular to the gym to extract all its benefits!

Thank you amitking, I am thinking of going twice a week now. Im not really doing it to be a body builder, but im intrerested in cardio-vascular as there is history of heart problems in my family.

BE CAREFUL! Me and my sister joined Balley Total Fitness March of last year and cant get out of our contract. They wont let us cancel even though I barely have a job beginning next week, we dont use the GYM and the closest one ONLY one is 25 mint from our house. They dont listen to reason. I HATE THEM! SO be careful. I thought the GYM was great when we joined, now I will NEVER EVER join one again! GGGGRRRRR :((((

You should remember that most people in the gym look daft at all times. Even the super tanned, super buff people. In fact, I think that they look most ridiculous. As long as you stop when you feel any discomfort and check in with a trainer before you make any big adjustments, I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm proud of you for even going in -- gyms can be really stressful places where it seems everyone knows what is going on except for you. At least, thats how they seem to me. Everyone's buzzing around, doing their thing, and I feel so lost in the middle of it all. so props to ross for biting the bullet, going to the gym, and even better LIKING IT!

I've haven't started exercising in a gym yet, but i'm planning to start this month. I feel it's dangerous to train alone because you might do something wrong and just worsen your problems. Don't take the risk!!!!!!! Make sure that u do all your exercises in front of an instructor. I know many people who have tried to practise on their own....and believe me, things have backfired greatly

Congrats on making that great step ! I do recommend you find a partner , that will help motivate you and also decrease risk of getting hurt . I remember once I was doing weight training in a crowded narrow gym , I was standing up and doing curls with a bar , while next to me someone was lying back on a bench doing chest lifts .Anyway , I forgot to fasten the weights to the bar , and towards the end of the repetitions , I lost balance with the bar , it slanted towards the guy next to me and the weight slid off , passing a few centimeters from the head of the guy on the bench next to me , I think his heart stopped beating for a few moments !! He glared at me angrily , I apologized almost laughing in his face ! I was also relieved because I almost caused him to be killed .

I have tried being in a gym before but did not feel comfortable in that kind of environment and prefer working out at home with my own equipment. There are definitely advantages of using a gym though as you can ask someone for assistance about certain types of equipment and how they work and what part of the body they help the most. You can meet some nice people there and possibly make friends as well. Only you know what your limitations are so you should ask someone there for advice with what equipment you should use and how long to make sure you do not hurt yourself.

i never like to go to a gym alone.. i don't know why. i feel stupid there. people look at you from all angles and its not very fun for me. i would rather exercise at home. for you, great!!! you will have some fun i hope. exercise is an important part of our lives, and no matter where you do it, it should be done!!

well gyming is always gud for health and it benfits alot but as u said u are first timer i will suggest do have a supervision of some trainer or an old gymer and than proceed and spend some time understanding ur body rather than experimenting.
