Anyone remember how to make Hire's Home-made Root Beer?

When I was young, my neighborhood friend's Mom used to make home-made root beer...and, boy it was delicious! I remember she had this little bottle of Hires Root Beer Extract, and with that and yeast and some other ingredients, she'd whip up a brew, put it in clean glass bottles, and "cap" them with a neat ol' "bottle-capper" tool. I think they had to "sit" for a while before they should be opened, but when we did open one, it was like grabbing the gold ring! Such a pleasant, smooth, rich rootbeer flavor; almost 'creamy', just a tad 'bitter', but so wholesomely delicious! I've been thinking about trying my hand at it, but don't know where to start. Anyone out there have any ideas, instructions, recipes, etc.?
