When entering into a classroom, a discussion, a group of people looking to fix something that is broken or trying to figure out what went wrong.
One basic rule is to listen, and participate.
Discussions that don't interest you won't. Have you ever been in a classroom where people are forced to entertain ideas that they are not interested in?
How does one thing affect your life and suddenly when you see the effects you become interested in all aspects of how things got started.
Like dominoes one event cascades into another and can even split, imagine multiple starting points they don't have to be started all at the same time, imagine a round table and one person going around the table knocking one domino and starting a cascade, and then around the table some more and knocking over another domino and starting another cascade.
Imagine the table the universe.
Imagine the dominoes stars.
Imagine the origin of life on Earth.

I fully comprehend what you mean, suppose the conversation is taking a turn in a direction that you know is completely wrong.
Suppose you know someone is blatently lying and you can't say anything until it is your turn to speak, but that doesn't happen until much later when even more information is introduced and fabricated?
These questions go beyond being interested in a conversation and into what happens when the conversation takes a wrong turn?
The thoughts that I am offering are in line with games played like the shell game. The ability of a person to hide a piece of information and mislead people for dubious purposes.
I do hope you find much interest in other conversations, I look forward to your participation. I will seek out your conversations as well.
I have a poem on my mind.
Peace and Blessings to you and all.

You are abosolutely right! I can not learn anything from a lecture or any study if the subject does not interest me. It is like I have the process turned off in my brain. I do not even comprehend the information unless the it holds some interest for me.
