I am going to go for it

I have loved writing ever since I was little. I have always kept a journal, or a diary, and recently added blogging to the mix. I have also done a lot of creative writing, and free association writing. It has always helped me feel a bit better when I am down, and let me be myself. I have been collecting ideas and jotting them down for years. I sat down and looked and I have a pretty good outline for a novel. I think I am going to go for it and give it a shot. I figure whats the worst that could happen, I spend some free time doing something I love, and nothing more happens with it? No big loss. Has anyone else written anything and managed to get it published?

I'm starting at an old age (29) to go for my dream of writing and have not been published yet. I just want to offer you the best wishes and luck on your new career. I think writers need a lot more support than we actually get out there.

Well, you just go for it, and all the best to you! Although I'm a writer, most of my writing is technical in nature, and not really for publication. However, I had a short story published in Texas Monthly when I was in college, and finished third in the state's "freshman writing contest." That's the only work of fiction I've had published. Over the years, I've had an assortment of non-fiction articles published-- from a series on the history of pens, to business advice in trade journals. I do have an assortment of outlines (and chapters) written for a half-dozen novels, but I've never found the contiguous block of time needed to complete any of them.

Thank you. There lies the one problem I foresee. Time. With an active 6 month old who doesn't believe me when I tell him babies are supposed to nap, time may be a big issue for me. But I am a pretty persistant person when I get an idea in my head. So I figure I may lose some sleep along the way and do a lot of my writing in the wee hours of the morning, but if I get to make even a pseudo-career out of something I love, then it will be worth it.

At the ripe old age of 44, I have begun actively trying to get published. I have submitted short stories to magazines, and poetry. I have entered the Toronto Star Short Story contest three years in a row. I have met with published authors and had them critique my work and I have gone to their seminars (it's lots of fun - you should try it). I have been in a writing group for the last 3 years and this group has motivated me as well as helped me improve my writing. My first novel, though I submitted to one agent, I know I will have to edit again. I am in the fifth edit of my second novel (but procrastinating heavily). I have a goal to finish it this spring and get it sent out to agents (not the whole novel - whatever they require as posted on their websites or in Writer's Market). It's never too late. Good luck!

CONGRAD'S! Keep us updated when you get published! I am sure you will do it. Just recall this much WRITE EACH DAY! I hear those working on books just put an hour or two aside each day to write. You can STILL have a real life. I myself I am looking into ideas for a book. But my memoir will still probably be the first book I publish. Its gotta keep going and I paused too much on it. Maybe my new job will help with more memories of my old job working for a bookstore... hoepfully so! I have only tried so far to publish poetry one poem, two or a book. I entered two book contest for poetry last year and sadly didnt get anything won :(( but I look back and realize my problem was not planning my poetry. Truly I have TONS AND TONS of poems from high school on up. Recently recovered 3 more notebooks full. Trust me I have plenty to try for just need to get it going. *crosses fingers* stuff for the future. Take care and best of luck! keep us posted! :))

Thank you. I will let everyone here know how it goes. And a couple hours a day is probably all I will get to put it all together, because my 6 month old keeps me quite busy. I am thinking I can get him to play and or take a couple of naps in there to maybe get a little done each day though.

I've been working on a series of short stories for awhile now that I hope someday will make a strong enough collection to become a real book. I am not very interested in self-publishing but there are a lot of writers on MyLot who do that. Good luck to you. How can you go wrong when you are doing something you love?

Thank you. That is how I feel. I figure even if I dont get published, I can chalk it up to experience, and actually doing something I like to do in my spare time. Good Luck with your short stories.

All I can say is go for it. Seize your dream it will make you a fulfilled person if you follow what you really desire to do in life. Just always put inspiration in your life and create your own goal to achieve it. I have been made a decision before of making blogs for online profit and it works well.

Thank you. For me following my dreams will be an accomplishment in and of itself, if I am a success, well that will just be a bonus.

Go for it! I always believed that we should follow our dreams. I have tried writing not because I love to write but because I love to read. I have started on a romantic novel but it's nowhere near finished yet.

I too enjoy writing and I someday want to be published and get paid for it. I have several articles published online but I would also like to be recognized for writing fiction. Currently I have a 50,500 word rough draft ready to polish. All I can say is to keep on writing as it sounds like it makes you happy.

Hi, definately good luck with writing your novel, go ahead and do it whether you ever get it published or not I say. I've had some poetry published, and when I was in my teens and early 20's I wrote a few articles for magazines and things too. It is VERY hard to get published unless you happen to have the right style for the publication you're looking at then forget it. A few tips... Think about your market and look at which publishers you contact when you try to sell your book. If they primarily deal in sci-fi and you're writing romance then they're not likely to take it. Secondaly always include an SAE if you want your manuscript returned, and NEVER EVER send the original always send a copy! Be prepared for rejection. I can almost garentee you that you'll be rejected a lot, and it can be upsetting especially if they seem to be tellingyou that you're no good, but keep on. If nothing else, you can have it bound and give copies to friends and family for christmas etc. It will be a very personal present! GOOD LUCK!

I admire people who would give time to indulge and develop their passions and what they love to do. It is part of who we are and it's our form of expression. We don't actually feel whole without letting our passions or interest have a free reign. All I could say to your plan is good luck and more power. It's doing something that you really love that would make one a lot happier and feel fulfilled and making a success out of it is just a bonus.

Thank you so much. You are right. I will enjoy doing it, even if I am not a success, but if I am a success, then it will be a wonderful bonus.

I am a freelance author and have many pieces published. But I hate to warn you that even though you may want to get it published, publishers see literally thousands of stuff each year and only pick the cream---even many famous authors were turned down by different publishing houses...do not get discouraged. Writing is NOT an easy job!

I am well aware that this wont be an easy road. But I tend to be stubborn. I will just keep trying. :) Thank you for the words of warning.
