by your description of efficieny & effectiveness, i probably do put more emphasis of effectiveness rather than efficiency since majority of the time I do assessment of my work and prioritize my schedule based on the percentage of effect in my goals. By choosing I would ask myself "If i accomplish the task, will it have an impact with regards to my log-term goal?" If let's say i will try to accomplish 20% of the tasks and those tasks would have an 80% effectiveness in my goals, I would have accomplished much rather than doing the 80% of the tasks that are not important, in which it will have a 20% effectiveness in my goals.

You are right in applying the 20:80 rule with regard to accomplishing 20% of your tasks which are more important.
If you can achieve 80% effectiveness in your goals with that rule, that is excellent !
Well done and keep it up! :-)

this is an interesting topic
it all depends on what i am focusing on and what is my target
but i do have to admit to i usually emphasise on efficiency more than on effectiveness most of the time
even thaugh when i am reading my ansewr again now i do think that those two are connected..

Thanks for your response. At last, I have a friend who cares to respond to this.
Efficiency focuses on doing things right all the time as it reflects on one's productivity.
Effectiveness emphasises more on doing the right things or performing the correct tasks.
Being efficient does not necessarily mean one is effective because one may not do it correctly.
Example: A person may be very efficient in using an axe to cut trees. But another person would be considered more effective if he uses an electric sawing machine to cut more trees.
(Note: this is just an example. I am not suggesting that cutting down more trees is good).
The point is that if one uses the correct tool, he will be more effective.
However, if one is effective in performing his tasks, he can also be efficient.

I focus on effectiveness. I would rather do the thing right the first time then have to do it all over again. I find efficiency rather cold, and has no heart. I am also sure that if most of the time, I spent tidying out instead of making sure the letter was perfect with no errors, I would not get much done. I mean if the thing has not been fixed because you have to vacuum the floor and straighten out the bookcase, why?

Glad to know that you are focussing on effectiveness and doing things right the first time.
You will be effective in accomplishing your tasks.

Efficiency = doing the right thing
Effectiveness = doing the thing right
That is how I believe of the two at least. I believe in the adage 'a thing badly done is worse than a thing undone' so I think I'd rather be more effective than fast. A balance of both would be a great formula for achieving one's desired outcomes but the equilibrium between both can be hard to find. So far, I've focused more on being effective than being productive but I constantly seek to increase my productivity without compromising the quality of my output, be it mental or physical work. Nice topic, It'd be nice if more people shared their thoughts on this so we can see how most do their jobs.

Glad to know that you liked this discussion topic and you had focused more on effectiveness.
However, if you read my response to the first person, it should be :
Efficiency = doing things right
Effectiveness = doing the right things
Hope more people can share their comments and experiences here.
Thanks for your input :-)
