The Last Girlfriend?

I'm reading a book currently called 'The Girlfriend Curse' where the premise is that the heroine, Peg, is always the last girlfriend. Ie. Shortly after dumping her, her ex boyfriends meet a woman, fall in love and get married? I've heard about this phenomenom in real life, but I'm curious, has anyone else ever been 'the last girlfriend' or been 'The New wife'?
