We all do it, but when you have a penny left as change do you keep it or give it to the cashier? I mean I really don't like pennies, seems like you need so many to make anything, so I always give mine to the cashier, I know a lot of people do this, so do you??

I always give my to the cashier because I don't have much use for pennies. Also, there have been a couple of times when I was a penny short and the cashier just took it out of the penny dish that was beside the cash register. After that happened to me the first time I have been returning the pennies.

If there is a dish or jar for the pennies I will leave it, but so that the next person who might not have one can take it. I do occasionally take one if I need it. I try to leave more than I take. But the above only applies if I'm paying in cash, of course; which I rarely do.

I do different things with it. If I am going through the drive through at Tim Hortons, I put the change in our little change bucket in the car. My husband saves the change to buy coffees durning the week. If I am at a corner store I usually put the in the penny dish.

I keep mine and then put it in a jar. I am very tight with money, and since I don't get it often or even that much I save all of it. I had saved over 500 in a years time with just pennies.

I keep all the spare pennies and put them into a bottle. It's surprising how fast those pennies add up to a tidy sum of money. Last year I saved all my pennies and used the proceeds for a few extra treats at Christmas

Yes, you are right, but I have young children as well as older children and if I had such a jar in my house it would always be empty for those reasons, thanks for sharing

I always keep my pennies! And I also make my hubby and kids save pennies. I pick them up on sidewalks, parking lots, where ever. Every single penny adds up, is what I always say. I know... it's just 1 cent! At the end of the year about Christmas time, I take out the jars of pennies from the year and roll them all up, or take them to the bank to be counted. One year I had $38 in pennies!!! Yes, I know, that's alot of pennies! And have you ever picked up $38 in pennies? They are very heavy! The girl though I was carrying bricks when I walked into the bank. Every penny counts, and the more you all throw away, the more I find! LOL

It depends. Sometimes I will take it back because I often times throw my loose change in my kids' piggy banks. If I a mat a gas station or something where they have the "penny pots" on the counter, I usually just throw it in there.

I do not hand the pennies I get from the cashier back to them. In fact I will do something else with that penny even if it seems like I'm not contributing a lot to the cause. I will drop that penny into one of those boxes that donate all that spare change to a charity or a group that supports a very worthy cause. I think that there is not much else you can do with an extra penny except save it and roll it up with a bunch of other pennies. Then you can always take it in to the bank and get it changed into bills. I guess when it comes down to it, the smartest thing you can do is save that little coin because it might be helpful later on. You can either put it in the bank with a bunch of other pennies you saved or you could hold on to it yourself. If you go shopping later on you can always keep some with you in case the thing you buy is over a certain amount of money. I think personally it would be smarter to save those pennies and then take them in when you've been able to roll enough of them for a sizable amount of money. Then just take those rolls in to a bank and they will deposit them into your account for you. I don't think I'd be able to keep a whole pile of pennies with me when I go shopping but I at least keep a few with me. I figure it would be a good idea if I have some spare change of all denominations just in case I run into a situation where I have to pay an exact amount and I have it on me. I feel that if I can go ahead and not have to get change back, I've lightened my load in terms of the amount of change I carry on me. Spare change is always good no matter what type it is, at least that's what I think. I know there are people who just go ahead and throw the penny away after they get the money back from their purchase. I think that's's crazy because it's still money, no matter how small it is. Think about it like this, save enough of them and who knows you might surprise yourself with how much you can put away. You can always do it the good old fashioned way. Go out and buy a couple decorative piggybanks and fill them up as much as you possibly can with pennies. That way you have a place to put the pennies you have left over and you can always take them into the bank just like that. I also have a tendency once and a while to drop the excess pennies I get into the little container that says "Take A Penny, Leave A Penny". At least then if I can't find a good use for them someone else can use them to help them out. I really cannot see myself throwing pennies out into the trash like I know some other people do on a regular basis. I just think that it's better if the pennies go somewhere where they can be used as opposed to them just getting placed somewhere where they'll collect dust. In conclusion, I have a tendency to either keep the pennies I get back or I will place them somewhere in the store where another patron can use the pennies to help themselves out. As well, I think that if I keep pennies in a big piggy bank it will help me to keep the pennies in a safe location away just in case I may need them later on! . . Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

I usually donate mine to the little cup by the register that is designated for "need a penny" if their is one available. Otherwise I just take it and through it to the bottom of my purse. :)

There is usually something for some cause beside the till , I usually throw it in there if it is a good cause I will throw more then penny's in. Other then that if they hand it to me I take it I do not stand and wait if I realize it is a penny or two.

Hmm, it seems very strange to me to give back a penny to the cashier. I guess it's just not the done thing in the UK! we tip waiters, taxi drivers, even hairdressers sometimes and such like but not cashiers, lol! Besides, in the UK it would be the sdhop/business/company that would get the extra penny, in fact i'm not even sure they could take it, they'd have to put it in a charity jar or something i think. maybe we are just tight with our money in the UK? I have never given a cashier back any of my money, and don't know of anyone else who's done this. Seems very odd to me!

We don't practise tipping in Singapore. So if I get a penny back, I will take it. In fact if I ask the cashier to keep it, she would think I am insulting her by giving her something so insignificant! :P

Some times I tell the cashier to keep the change, but they don't actually get the penny. It just stays in the register and get counted with at the end of the night. I tell them to keep it either because I am in a hurry or I just don't want the penny. Most of the time when I get change back I give it to my kids who like to save it.

I always keep penny on my car, there's a huge number of street beggar in here. so I pick some penny on the dashboard, make me easier than I have to take it from my wallet. I kept the penny from cashier when I felt my dashboard ran out from penny, gave it to the cashier when I have much.

I keep all pennies I get from the casheir for I put it into my son's saveings bank I have started for him and every penny counts. I also put all extra change in their as well for when it get's to be so much I take it all down and have it put into his saveing account I opend for him at the bank. If I wasn't doing this for him then I would just give it to the cashier and tell her to keep it.

I always keep my pennies. I dont even spend my change anymore. I save all my change, it's not much at a time, so you dont miss it, but little by little it adds up. I even pick up pennies off the ground. lol
