Last night I watched the movie 'An American Haunting'. It is based on a true story and is about the only case validated by the US Federal Government where possession has actually caused death. It scared the bejesus out of me until the very end when I realised that her 'possession' was actually brought on by herself and was in fact not the work of a demon or spirit. This is just one theory of what causes possessions, and this movie wanted to highlight that. At the end of the movie, it says that a possible meaning of the word 'poltergeist' is a form of telekinesis, mostly affecting adolescent girls under extreme stress. The story goes that her father sexually abused her and this is what she created to escape that and to stop him from doing it again. All the strange happenings ended when her father eventually died as a result of the possession- like activity. This happened in Red River Tennessee in 1818 and it really interests me. What is your take on possession? Do you think this theory of bringing it on yourself is feasible?

I believe some issues such as the one you mentioned could and do come from awful abuse, even with the well known example of Sybil. But I do believe demons can possess a person, and like flowerchilde said, a ouji board can contribute to that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sybil_(film) This site should take you to Wikipedia's section on Sybil. Sybil is the name a woman was given to protect her identity because she was said to have 16 different personalities in her body. Today, there are some people who thinkg it was not true, but this woman suffered so much abuse, that her case is a classic case of multiple personality disorder. There is a movie called 'Sybil' based on this ladies life. It was made in the 1980s. If you by chance find a way to rent this movie, don't watch it alone. : )

That looks very very very interesting. I'll have a look at the video store for it and let you know what I think. It is very sad to think that the abuse was so bad that this happened to her. Thanks for the link.

When dealing with the supernatural, one cannot ignore the logical however one must also be willing to accept the strange and unusual as well. Even though I do participate in ghost hunting and paranormal research, I have not had the experience to date of witnessing a poltergeist (meaning noisey ghost) or telekinesis so I have nothing to offer in that area. As for ouija boards...I have used them before however I do believe that ouija boards are 'doors' or portals to another side. Sometimes what entity comes through is harmless and only wants to communicate and other times, what can come through is awfully unpleasant. I haven't ever witnessed stones being thrown, people levitating, or a person's head spinning around. I HAVE heard thumping noises, felt breezes (when no windows were open), watched candles flicker (with no windows open), known that objects have moved from one place to the next without ever seeing them move. Not saying that the other stuff can't happen; just that I haven't seen it. So based on what I know and have seen, I would have to say that the theroy on the Bell Witch could be accurate. At the time in history when this movie occured, something like a father molesting his daughter was not something that was aired out in public, nor was it dealt with in any way that it is today. I think its quite feasible. Though I have to admit that I was expecting more from this movie and was rather disappointed in the ending. I guess I was hoping for more of an illogical reason for the strange happenings.

Haha I thought the movie was good- even though I only actually saw half of it due to me being too scared to watch it. If it wasn't based on a true story it wouldn't have bothered me, but, considering we watched it at night with the lights off, knowing it actually happened and could happen to anyone scared the living daylights out of me. I'm really interested in the fact that you're a ghost hunter..I'm so interested in the supernatural but I'm also very easily scared. I'm scared of the dark :-(

I saw that movie! And it does make sense to me.. Right after seeing this movie I saw a documentary on the story that inspired the movie "the exorcist" - this story happened to a young man and began with his aunt using a ouiji board with him (if I'm remembering correctly). And there was most of the supernatural occurrances. Also as far as possession is concerned, they built the Tower of Babel with ascending stairs winding round the outside for intiates to ascend to the different levels, and for them to ascend to the stars, which they thought were gods, especially the wandering stars, the planets. And the topmost level was possession by a god, or gods.. I read a book years ago written by an ex satanist who said this still goes on (at certain parties, erc) and it's very spooky.. And isn't this also in voodoo? I came across some interesting stuff not too long ago, which was Aleister Crowley used to do rituals to "open portals for entities from other dimensions to come through to the earth plane" and he met an entity named "Lam" who looked a lot like our e.t.'s of today (well the illustrations of the large eyed and large headed e.t.'s) - also a partner of his did some of these with L. Ron Hubbard (do I have that name right I wonder? he's the founder of scientology, and they pulled in some of these entities too.) Myself I think there's plenty of 'em running around the world already, and I sure wouldn't be doing anything to 'conjure' one!
