Do you eat when you're stressed?

to eat or not to eat? - People tend to find comfort in eating whenever they're stressed out. I know that eating is supposed to be enjoyed. But it shouldn't be the main source of joy or your main response to stress, boredom or emptiness in life.

Whenever I'm facing a lot of stress, my appetite will dwindle. Everything I ate seems tasteless. I can't find any pleasure in eating even when its my favorite food. I remember way back when I'm studying at the University, A lot of my classmates will splurge on food in between breaks from our gruelling dental practices. They do tell me that they reward themselves with food. But I think they're using the wrong word. Rather, they're comforting themselves with it. When they are hungry physically, emotionally and mentally, and food is so readily available that it's the easiest source of comfort. Most of them ended up gaining a lot of weights by the time we graduated. I know that food is meant to be enjoyed. But am I right to think that eating is not supposed to be the main source of joy or your main response to stress, boredom or emptiness in our life. Do you think that eating is the ultimate reward for a hard day's work or a job well done? Do you have your own ways of coping with stress? Please share your thoughts.

I eat when I am stressed, I eat when I am happy, when I am sad or angry. I have food issues. Eating should not be a reward, but often times it is and that is a tough thing. I work at it and I have a good support system and I still struggle every day ! I wish anyone with this issue the best !

Yea and when I'm stressed I certainly do not want any of those stupid carrots :) Chocolate, sugar, spicy foods, oh come on lets face it when I'm stressed I eat. Which of course makes me even more stressed so I eat even more. Ok, seriously. I do try to deal with stress in two ways. I pray, pray, and pray some more. I am also known to go out into the woods alone and just scream as loud as I can - it's a great stress reliever. A third thing which I have never done but works every time is to "hug a tree". Really, the theory is you absorb energy from the tree which calms you (like laying on the grass and looking up at the sky) - just the thought of hugging a tree is enough to pull me out and get me laughing. Has worked many times on friends and family too. Kids did do it one day :)

LOL...faith, I haven't heard that hugging a tree can be therapeutic. I'm living in an urban city. I guess I need to plant a tree of my own in my patio. :0

OMG, I never knew about relieving stress by hugging a tree! My 6 year old son *loves* to hug trees and poles (like a light pole, handicap pole, or something similar). I always thought this was a little odd, but would let him do it anyway. And he is always happy afterwards, even if he was having a tantrum beforehand. I guess he knows a good thing, eh?

Sometimes when I'm nervous I want to eat, and sometimes I get specific cravings like for chocolate. Other times I simply loose my appetite and feel naucious. I think it depends on what the cause of me being that way was in the first place and what mood I was in when it happened.

Hi, PT, everyone seems to be craving for sweets whenever they're stressed out. I think I just lost my touch with the sweet things. :)

I crave specific chocolates like aero mint and those are very hard to find, only one shop sells it last time I had a delicious aero mint was maybe 6 months ago )); I tend to crave things that I can't get lol. Another thing is nice ripe red mangoes, not sure why but sometimes I seriously crave them. It is a good thing you don't crave sweets saves you $ on the dentist hihihi

Oh bunny... why made you so stressed? Just think of me and your worries will all be banished. ;-) You are a dentist, bunny? I eat because I *hate* too. Very rarely, I just can't force myself to eat so I don't eat. But hours later, no amount of happiness, sadness or stress is going to give me a full stomach. I just can't go without food for too long. I don't know what you are stressed about, but don't be alright? Cheer up. ^^

Oh no, sweetie...I'm not stressed for now. I've been like this for many years now. It seems that I can't appreciate the food I'm eating. But I don't starve myself either. PS: Yeah...I'm a graduate of Dentistry. A very tough course but am glad I made it. :)

When under stress, there are times when i'll eat too much and times when i'll skip meals only because i forget to eat. It's really not advisable. It's the fastest way to sickness. Lately, i've become an emotional eater. I have two words for that, "long-distance relationship". In times of depression or PMS, i tend to binge on the guiltful kinds of food. Luckily, i don't gain so much due to my regular dance classes. Nonetheless, eating leaves me feeling bloated and guilt as charged. Now, i plan to cut back and go back to my regular routine. My old motto is "Eat everything in moderation", keyword being "moderation". This has been interrupted by the holidays and relatives coming over from USA and Europe. I might say, Filipino families love to eat. Food is comforting. Just the feeling of eating so much can somewhat be like an accomplishment or it satisfies us. The bad thing is we stuff ourselves to satisfy what is lacking in ourselves or in our lives. Could that be the case? Well, it's my observation. Nowadays, i try to cope with my emotional stress by writing, more dancing and a healthier diet. Thus, i hope to create for myself a healthier lifestyle.

Most people eat when they are bored, stressed, etc. I know I find myself snacking when I'm bored- I try to tell myself I'm not hungry-- but it seems to pass the time. I even drink water. It seems we eat for all the wrong reasons- I wish I would only eat when I'm hungry.. We eat to celebrate-- lets go to dinner.. I grab a candy bar at work when I feel like ripping out my hair!

I'll eat more if I'm stressed but did not overdo it. I think it is not rewarding with food but killing ourselves with it. Other than that I'll do some religious prayers and listen to some soft music. And if I have a little bunny to play with that would be real cool.

LOL, naka75, bunnies may be good to look and soft to touch, but they have a fiery nature too. My bunny bite me once because the veggies I gave him was not his favorite.

I cannot eat at all when I'm stressed, or upset. It makes me feel physically sick even though I know I should eat to keep my energy levels up. Food shouldn't be a source of comfort though. I've seen a lot of people in that cycle of splurging to make themselves feel better, and then feeling disgusted with themselves afterwards. It's a tough one to break. In terms of rewarding ourselves for a hard day or a job well done may be different though. Like graduation or passing a tough exam. That may be a reason to go for a meal to celebrate, but it's not a reason to go completely overboard.

I eat when I'm bored, when I'm feeling sorry for myself, When i'm frustrated with someone. It's a very bad habit for me because it caused me to gain almost 100 lbs in the last 5 years!

EXACTLY! I studied nursing and had been facing the STRESSFULL life of mixed school and hospital duty works. The stress is from physical, emotional, psychological and appetite. it's funny because I exactly felt the mood to really EAT sooooo much everytime I feel stressed out. It's because I felt like I'm suffering too much and I should reward myself with food. Thus, food became my coping mechanism with stress. After finishing a pint of choco crumble ice cream or 4 slices of pizza, I feel like I'm so energized and ready to work again.

If I am really stressed out I am like you. I can't eat. Nothing tastes good, it all seems dry and hard to swallow. Unfortunately for my midline, it takes a great deal of stress to get me to react like that.

Oh man. Is food ever a comfort for me. I hate that it is because that is why I have a weight problem. When I am happy, I eat, when sad, I eat, when bored, I eat, etc. I really can't find an end to it. Then I will try to go on a diet and get really stressed out and totally blow my dieet.

I have overate due to stress.Due to the reward system. Due to "because I deserve it!" Too many people (including myself) eat 'because of something not because they are hungry. I ended up having weight loss surgery 3 1/2 years ago due to my 'becauses'. It is scary thinking back about the stress I was under and how I dealt with it.

No, I'm the total opposite. When I'm stressed I tend to clean. I don't know why but make me mad and I will clean the house, car whatever in no time. You would think I could lose weight since I don't eat when I'm stressed but no. I guess I don't get stressed enough.

When im stressed i tend to eat more and i think that is a normal human reaction. I suppose food helps you take your mind of whatever it is that is troubling you. I also find however that food is a way of filling in time. So my advice is when u feel stressed dont give yourself time to eat. Find other things to do and occupy your time with. watching televisions doesnt help either especially when the food commercials come on for pizza ice cream snacks etc. Deal with your stress - dont add over eating to the list of things that stress you!!!!

Thanks for the advise, cute125. Whenever I'm stressed out, I will clean my house from top to bottom. I find that it works well to ease some of the tension away.
