Okay! I wanted to put a very controversial subject on thisso that maybe more people woild read it. I want to know what you think about slavery. Now, I don't mean slavery like the Ancient Romans did it or even like ther Colonial Americans did it. More like the Ancient Greeks did it. When the slaves were valued members of their society. They had the right to vote and to hold importand jobs and to pursue and education. I have been tossing around the notion that this might be an answer to our criminal justice system. What do you think? And -- lets keep it civil. It's just a discussion, after all.

Yes excellent plan WeenitsMom and lets start with child abusers. Use these "men and women" if that's what they deserve to be called, as slaves and I mean use them as slaves. If this became the way of life and this was our justice system, I believe after the first 20 or so people would think twice. Our law here in Canada and I'm sure in other parts of the world is way too relaxed and layed back.

LOL! Now we just have to decide who's gonna own/tend to/take care of or what have you, this new class of citizen. I think that they should have to work and bring in an income in order to pay for their upkeep. Thanks!

Many years ago, the Greeks held slaves. They believed that the slaves, though they were the property or their owners, were still viable members of the community. They were not allowed to participate in practices that their owners did not approve of but required to contribute to the communuity at large. I see no reason that this practice should not be reintroduced.

Several years ago my state considered inmates to be slaves of the state. The prison system had to stop that practice though because of the civil rights laws. Then they used work release to farmers and some of the higher ranking staff had houseboys that would mow the grass and do general cleanup. At that time the prison involved was called a Training Center and was intended to teach job skills and provide work experience. Work release and off site jobs were limited to the inmates who were considered to be low risk. Most of that has now changed, the Training Center is now a Correctional Center and the only work release is road cleanup crews who are supervised by staff. Although the idea may seem good, in todays Civil Rights climate it would never work. The ACLU would have a field day with something like that. The only other thing that comes to mind is Community Service, but that is normally reserved for lesser crimes.

Well, the idea would be a constitutional ammendment. It would have to be. And, frankly, with the cost of housing these people, it does sound like a good idea. They work to pay for their up keep, they are under constant supervision and the government is not paying to feed and house them. We could use the prisons for people who forge checks, or con the elderly or rob banks, ect. You may be right that it wouldn't work, but I think it's a great topic for debate! Thatnks for your response!
