With the cost of living being what it is, we are all cutting corners where we can. I have heard a lot of commercials on new phone companies that offer better rates and complete calling packages that include both local and unlimited long distance calling. Currently I use our local phone company for local and 'extended' local calls and carry a separate plan that gives me unlimited long distance. Have any of you tried any of the new phone services? Vonage? Verizon? Embarq? Internet phone services?

Hi greylady, In an effort to save as much as I could on all expenses, I went through the phone hunt too. Originally we had a landline with only local calling. It was about $25.00 per month. No long distant, but at that time, we didn't call long distant. We were sucked into believing cell phones were the way to go. The only good thing about cell phones was that my husband could call me 15 times day to tell me he loved me. The bill went up to $75.00. (2 phones unlimited local and unlimited long distance). We were locked in for a 2 year period. In searching for cheaper rates, I have now opted to go with my cable company, getting High Speed Internet service, digital cable service, plus my telephone, no limit on local or long distance, all for the one low price of $118.00 a month. My Internet and cable were $97 together, so dropping the cell phones and going with cable telephone service was a big savings for us. I did get a Track Phone or Go Phone for my husband. He bought a $50.00 calling card when we activated his phone. He has had it 3 months and still has $27.00 on his card. It's our way to go and have the things we think we need. (Internet, cable and telephone).
