branching out as a writer

Branching out as a writer is possible. From my own experience, I have learned that there are other avenues open to writers, particularly if they have been published. For example, quite a few years ago, one of the Instructor editors asked me if I cared to serve as a contributing editor. There would be no payment, but my name would appear under the masthead and the magazine would have a few projects (for pay) for me to work on. Another related opportunity involved teaching courses in professional writing at local colleges, which I enjoyed very much and received money for. Still another opportunity involved mentoring technical writing courses for an online college. That job, which I still have, pays very well and allows me to work at home. So as you can see, jobs do exist for writers. It's a matter of knowing how and where to look. Being persistent helps as well.
