Did Steve Morse save Deep Purple?

When Blackmore quit back in 1994 Purple unaminously chose a guitar player who was anything but a Richie clone. Steve Morse has different musical influences, is a team player and earned his spot by dint of his fabulous musicianship. Ritchie has always been a master guitar player, but the last seven or so years with Deep Purple ha lacked inspiration and drive. If you've heard the first MOrse/Purple album Purpendicular you will know that he breatged new life in to the band whilst not compromising its past. Regrettably the Morse Purple albums have been largely ignored by most rock music outlets but they have produced some of their best albums ever. I highly recommend that you give them a listen, particularly Purpendicular and Bananas Did Steve Morse add to Deep Purples legacy?

While I enjoyed Deep Purple for years, I have not really kept up with them or Richie Blackmore. This much I know, they have had many personnel changes over the years, some even crossing paths with Black Sabbath. Also, from Deep Purple, other bands were born from that, the best known ones being Rainbow & Whitesnake.

Did Steve Morse add to Deep Purples Legacy?Yes I can say definitely Yes.His unique style drown a different line of Deep Purple's inspirational music.I like Ritchie Blackmore he is one of my favorite guitar players and musicians and I feel always extremely excited when I listen to him. Some years ago Deep Purple visited my country/Blackmore has already gone/.As a Blackmore's believer I bought my ticket at the last moment.I was so sceptic.I was one of the people who ignored Deep Purple without Ritchie. Thanks God I watched this remarcable concert. And in addition the biggest attraction and surprise for me was Steve Morse. After this event I have listened to all Deep Purple's albums with Sreve Morse. In conclusion I would say that this brilliant musician incorporates his specific style and gives another go to Deep Purple

Hello Treven - I had a very similar experience, seeing Purple with Morse in 1999 I think. They were really firing and Morse was unbelievable. The way he worked with Jon Lord was sensational. It remains the best concert I have ever seen

Deep Purple Perpendicular Album - Deep Purple Perpendicular Album
I do think Morse added to Deep Purple's legacy, however I don't think he saved them by any means. Once Richie Blackmore left, there was really no replacing him and building the band back up to what it was in the 70's. It just couldn't be done. Not only was music drasically changing, but so was what the industry was looking for. I have listened to Pupendicular and Banananas; while they are good, they are not the quality of Deep's earlier works. I will always love Blackmore and still do to this day. His playing has changed also. Have you listened to Blackmore's Night? It is great, but definitely different. I will agree though that I think much of the music of "Morse's Purple was overlooked and possibly snubbed.

Hello - yes I love Blackmore's Night and if there ever was a band that has been completely snubbed Blackmore's night is it. I agree that there was no replacing him, and MOrse didn't try to - he just did what he does best - be Steve Morse and Purple definitely responded. Jon Lord has been quoted as saying that Purpendicular is his favourite Purple album. Thanks for the response

My opinion is that there is no Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore! Yes with Morse they have a few good songs like "sometimes I Feel like Screaming". But there is no that magic in their music. Without Blackmore they are only a good band. With Blackmore they were superb band!
