Chiropractor or Doctor of Orthopedics. . .which is better

I am having severe pain in my neck and shoulders. I have gone to chiropractors for a few years, but this latest visit to a new chiropractor has left me with some very severe pain in my neck. I went back to him today and he sent me home to put ice on it after he did a "Cold Laser Treatment" on me. He said it was too swollen to adjust me. The thing is, yesterday, I went to him just for a normal adjustment and today, I can't move my neck because I am in so much pain. I've had friends tell me that I should go to a D.O. instead of a chiropractor. I don't know anything about D.O.'s. Anyone out there been to one and can you tell me what to expect if I do go to one? Thanks for any advice you can give.
