Superstitions and old wives' tales in your area

Black cat - This is a common superstition. A black cat crossing your path is said to bring bad luck.

What superstition and/or old wives' tales are common in your area? Does you or your family believe in it? Why or why not? I don't generally believe in superstitions and old wives' tales, but I sometimes follow them just so the "elders" won't nag me about it. :)

Not so sure if it is superstition or not, but we begin to become concerned for the relatives when they reach their 60th birthday and feel that way until they reach their 70th. if you can live to 70 you can live to be in 90's, but it is likely you will die by age 65 and a few "old timers" will die age 68. With both parents of the uncle and aunts in this rule one dying at age 59 and the other at age 70. And it is always near a minor holiday. Such as veterans day, memorial day, valentine's day. The major holidays are safe, like july 4th, new year, thanksgiving and christmas but the small ones, are not. Now the oldest of the cousins are approaching that 60 marker and we are wondering two things, will they also die in age order, and will they also die young? I am just glad I take after the other side of the family. As for traditions, putting a dollar over the front door, going out the front door and then in the back, on new years eve sometime before midnight means you will have money all year long. When we moved, I collected a nice little pot of funds, as the dollars with years of dust on them were over the door frame. We also are superstitious about the sudden appearance of Roses it is a sign that we are being watched over and protected.

in addition, my husband's lola had a first hand experience regarding the "nuno sa punso". I think that a person should not talk about the superstitions & paranormal because it's what keeps them "alive," though I have some first hand experiences and also my father who grew up in Bicol had "extreme" experiences.

Well we have more from that here in our country, and even I, was raised in by leaning on it. But now that I've grown up, I learned that these are just to serve our society's ends. That these beliefs are just to control an individual, inhibit them or stimulate them into a behavior that is acceptable to the group and it is to promote our social cohesiveness.

I have long ago stopped believing on them also, but when I was still a kid I believed in most of the sayings like if you passed by to a hill of clay (punso) you have to say excuse me cause they say someone unseen is living there..another one is that you can't take a picture of 3 persons..or else the one in the middle will die..haha! I find them funny now.

We don't believe in superstition. We follow what the Bible says about life.

I know the parents of one of my friends from highschool were always very wary about driving on the night of a full moon. They always stuck to major highways and wouldn't take backroads during a full moon. I never quite understood that superstition.

probably the only superstition/old wives' tales that I remember was when there is a black butterfly or any butterfly the enters your house after a relative or a close friend who passed away, that they say it is the deceased who's visiting. don't know if it's true but i've experience it before.
