Do put your dog in a kennel when you leave the house?

When we first got our dog a year and a half ago we would put him in a kennel ifwe left to go somewhere. We did this after he ws housebroken because as a puppy he liked to chew on things and would eat things that made him sick once or twice. Nothing poisonous, I mean like a pillow he chewed until he got to the stuffing. Now he's going on 2 years old and is much better. My husband says we shouldn't kennel him when we leave for a few hours. I'd like to let him stay out of the kennel but I'm still afraid he'll somehow find something to chew and get sick. I make sure there's nothing tempting out that he can get to and he doesn't chew furniture or pillows anymore. He's a well behaved dog now that he's older. Do you let your dog run the house when you go away or do you have them in a kennel?

Fortunately whenever our family has gone away for holidays, my father has come around to our house to feed our 2 dogs. He comes once or twice each day, and there is always plenty of food and water. They are not allowed inside, and our back yard is big. However, he is getting on in age, I really think that very soon, they will have to go on dog kennels when we go away. This will be expensive for 2 dogs, and I doubt whether they will like it. There really is no other choice.

It is very normal for puppies to chew, they are like babies who put everything in their mouth. Most do grow out of it. I don't have dogs anymore, but when I did I just got someone to take care of the dog if I had to be away for awhile.

He's out of the "chewing" phase. It's the getting into something, like the cat box or eating something that will make him sick that I worry about. Thanks for responding.

We have been asking ourselves this question for a few weeks now. My puppy will be one year old in July so he is still young. he is doing really well though and we are thinking of leaving him out more now. I am just afraid that he will chew an electrical cord and get killed.

It sounds like our pups are pretty close in age. Mine doesn't chew on cords(knock on wood) and the cords we do have that he can reach have to be turned on with the light switch. I'm not sure if that part maks a difference. But, like you said that's kind of what makes it hard for me is that he's usually really good and I'm afraid the one time he gets into something is going to be the one time I leave him alone. I don't know if I'm being overly sensitive or not. But he's done well te few times I have left him out for short priods of time.

We put ours in a crate when we leave. Its for her own safty. I worry she will get into something or nock something over and get hurt. She does fine in her crate. She has toys and we leave the tv on for her.

I leave the tv or radio on too!! LOL! My husband thinks that's ridiculous but I think it keeps him company. He's got the cat to keep him company too. They get along really well.

No, luckily my dogs are old enough now not to get into mischief. The younger would be kept outside or brought with me when he was still in that 'stage'. When I foster dogs, I do crate them until I know they're trutworthy. I hate doing it to them, though, because they are always pound rescues that are on their way to a permanent home and it traumatises them.

I hate doing it to my dog to. I trust him now, like I said he doesn't ruin anything, I'm just afraid he'll find someway to get at something, like the cat box or food. I've left him stay out when I've been gone for just an hour or 2 and it went ok.
