I'm not sure what the peel contains that would make the apple no good without. I know that there is fibre in an apple and soluble fiber but I'm not sure where peel or fruit. I also no longer just bite into an apple because of my teeth but I do still enjoy the peel. I cut the apple with an apple cutter which slices out the core and leaves you with eight wedges which I can easily bite. I also will use the cutter to get the apple ready which goes into my morning oatmeal. Either way I always eat the peel so according to what you've written I'm getting the good apple.

Yes, I have heard that the best part of the apple is underneath the skin and if we peel them we are not getting the full benefit of them. I peel the apples before eating them because the peel usually gets lodged between my teeth and I find this very uncomfortable.

Now that you mention that I've often heard that the best part of a fruit/vegetable is right under the peel. Then that does make sense that they tell us to eat the peel with the fruit. I'm glad to hear your explanation to remind me what I already knew.

I have seen a lot of people doing this and often wondered why. I always eat an apple as it is, which is how my parents ate apples and therefore the way that I began those many years ago.

Sometime when I am out and I am feeling a bit peckish I will buy an apple and just give it a good rub before I eat it. It doesn't really bother me to eat it with the peel but if I am home where there are knives handy, I would always peel it. I suppose after reading your topic and the responses, I will have reconsider peeling the apple and throwing away the skin.

The skin of an apple is good for you. I think it has many properties that are believed to help in the prevention of cancer. I know that the core of an apple is also good as it contains pectin - this is a substance that also helps to fight cancer. However, be sure to wash the skin thoroughly before you eat it as it may contain chemical residues from pesticides if it is not organic.
