I just logged on this afternoon and discovered that I had a star. Mine is yellow with the number 8 on it but I noticed that other people have different colored stars with different numbers on them. What does that mean?

The stars mean that you've reached a hundred posts. The number in my opinion is either the quality of your posts or how often you participate in discussions. Congratulations on your star.
