How do you help your dog lose weight?

I'm always wondering how you go about helping your dog lose weight. We have a papillion that is extremely overweight, and we are struggling to help him lose it. We've cut him back to only 2 cups a day of the lite Science Diet, but he still seems to gain weight. Is this just something that happens to little dogs as they get older? He has arthritis, and is tough to take out for a walk because he can only make it a little ways down the road. Does anybody have ideas how I can help this dog lose weight? Thanks in advance

I would suggest taking him to the vet and see what they recommend. I would try to change the type of food you feed him and let him excercise as much as he can.

Honestly it doesn't matter if you cut down the amount of food. Try a different type of dog food. And with the arthritis problem, if you go to your vet they may have a medicine your dog can take to help with that. Then you can take your dog on walks. Even if he can only make it down the road a little ways it's still good to take him out on those walks. But take him on walks at certain times of the day. Like early in the morning when it's still cool. Or late in the evening when it's cooling down. He will most likely be able to make it farther. And let him walk at his own pace. Letting him walk at his own pace you will be able to go farther each day. Try starting out just once a day with the walks. Then as you see progress take him on walks both in the morning and at night.

Well i was goin to suggest putting him on different food that is specially for wt issues but you are already giving him the Science Diet MIND YOU I would make sure that is what the vet recommends (if you've not already talked to him/her)....and I was goin to suggest walking him more but you mentioned his arthritis.... Other than that and obviously goin to the vet if you havent already (maybe he/she could prescribe medication of some kind to help out)..be careful of your dog eating table scraps, dont let anyone in the house give him any extra food other than whta you put in his bowl.... Really thats all I can think of...I'd say the best bet really all things considered is taking him to the vet and voicing your concerns...
