Do you have a 72 hour kit? You dont need to have a perfect one with everything in it..start simple and build on it. You will feel calmer when the weather is calling for a disaster of whatever kind. Any kit is better than nothing at all. We personally have several kits. All are different and all are personalized. We have one that is made in a large white bucket. A friend worked at some kind of fruit drink place. They received the drink mix in large buckets. We purchased a few off her for $2.00 each. I keep this one in the closet in the hall. Inside the lid, I taped a piece of paper and wrote the itmes that was in the bucket. On the outside, I attached a bucket organizer with lots of pockets. I packed the things that would be needed most in the pockets. For example, a hand generated light, whistle on a string, and reg flashlight were each attached on a string and hung on handle. the pockets hold stuff that is needed quickly.

Important Papers YOU can make a copy of these on CD and carry it.
Copies of birth certificates, marriage license, will, insurance forms, copies of genealogy records.
Phone numbers you might need.
Credit card info.
Up to date photos of each family member.
I also took finger prints and hand prints of each family member for identification.
ADDITIONAL ITEMS
Potable water--
When my boys were toddlers, I kept a change of clothes in the kit also. If you have babies, you will need some paper diapers also.
It is a sensible idea to change the food and clothing in these kits every 6 months, when you switch the clocks back or forward perhaps. This is especially true if you have small children as they out-grow them so quickly.
Durable nylon packs
Metalized Woven Thermal Blanket
Separate nylon bag with tent.
*The bucket can be used for a porta potty if needed. Even if you live in warm areas of the country or world, you still need warm clothing in case of rain and winds. People get very chilled if wet and under stress. You don't want to experience hypothermia!
Be sure to personalize your bucket with items that fit your family. Also have enough items for each family member split among several buckets being sure enough people will be able to grab and carry them quickly.
I have enclosed a pictue of our bucket 72 hour kit. I hope I can do it anyway. It is one of the buckets that I keep in our closet.

Living in florida , we have no choice but to be prepared.I just wish all people were. People have a tendency to think because they don't live in a hurricane zone, they don't have to worry about it but they do .You never know when the weather is going to turn bad, especially with the wacky weather we have all been having

Well, I copied, pasted and printed your post.. that's a beginning, yes? I want a bag, with bags in it, with the supplies we can grab on our way out.. if the disaster requires our leaving.. And then I want the power outage supplies.. like matches and lighters, candles, water, nonperishable foods.. and want to have a wood stove all set for use.. etc. - I'm always after my kids to make sure they have blankets in the car during the winter.. and their phones well charged..

Wow, that is one huge project . Very creative . I would assume that you have had to prepare for natural disasters in your area. I had never even heard of a 72 hour kit until you wrote this article. What kind of storms do they have in your area? Was there a magazine article or a TV show that advised you on what to put in your bucket or did you just make this up yourself?

I looked twice..but I did not see medications on your list. May I also suggest a few other things - an air horn, if you need to be rescued the volume will make it easier for people to hear you, a fire extinguisher - just in case.
You may also want to consider id bracelets for everyone as well.

We keep meds in the backpack. Each of us have a backpack also. The bucket is easy to grab on the go and everyone has a backpack also.

This is a great basic kit to have. WE also have backpacks each with personal things in it. This bucket will be full when you get it packed with the items mentioned. Good luck to you.

This is a great idea. I am taking this list to the store with me and starting mine this weekend. You can never be too prepared.

I never lived in an area where natural disaster could occur. The idea looks good and it is a lot more efficient than storing supplies when one hurricanes is coming.
Hopefully you will never need it, in case you do you and your family will be all right.
