Has Anyone Lost An Animal Because of the Pet Food that was recalled?

I was watching Nightline this evening and they said that there may have been hundreds of animals who've died because of this. They also said that because animals are considered property that the owners have no recourse in the situation. Since I think most of us who have animals consider them part of the family, maybe we need to organize and change the law regarding this.
I'm sure that this was an unfortunate accident and I'm not suggesting doing this to create lawsuits but I know from experience that because animals are not treated as more than property, there is little to do when someone threatens an animal or threatens the person about an animal.
I was blackmailed a few years ago and forced to to deal with an evil woman because what she was doing wasn't against the law technically. She threatened to have my babies taken away if I didn't do what she said. Now, if she'd offered to help and worked with me a little, she probably could have persuaded me to do what she was after but instead, she turned my life upside down and ultimately caused me to have to put 10 of my cats in a kennel for over a year to protect them. It wasn't what she wanted that was so bad but it was the way she went about it that was evil. And, because I couldn't afford to move, I was trapped in the situation.
Fortunately, God got her out of my life. I don't know how but I'm real grateful! But the point is that animal owners have virtually no help when something like that or this pet food thing happens. There are no laws to protect our animals. For me, my cats are my kids and I love each of them individually. They are precious to me and losing any of them would break my heart.
It was very traumatic having them in the kennel for so long. I went to see them every chance I could but they were almost a two hour bus trip away from me and I had to work so I could only visit once a week for a couple of hours. They've been home with me for almost a year now but I still sometimes feel bad for having to put them there at all. However, I'm very grateful that God enabled me to put them there and keep them there safely and brought them all back to me! I thank Him every day for my babies being with me. And, I pray for protection over us until God gets us out of here and into a nice safe home.
Anyway, have any of you lost a pet to this tainted food? And what do you think about my idea to change the laws to protect our animals?

Well I'm glad you got your babies back and they are home safe. I think that there should be some way for people to press some sort of charges against the company. I mean, for all of those animals to die and be in so much pain and agony, to me that is animal cruelty plain and simple. I totally agree with you that the laws regarding this type of occurrence and others like it should definitely be changed. Someone has to be held accountable for their actions and it shouldn't be the pet owners.

I do think the laws need to be changed but I don't think that people should sue this company. It would be different if someone had maliciously done this to hurt the animals but I think that in this case, it was simply an accident of sorts. My concern for opening up lawsuits is that people are already "sue" happy in this country and there doesn't seem to be any leniency for human error anymore and we all make mistakes that sometimes cost others.
The funny thing is that when we make the mistakes, we expect others to have mercy on us and understand our side but we as humans don't tend to want to give others the same consideration we want when we err.
I just think that we need laws to protect us from people like the woman who blackmailed me who intentionally inflict pain on animals or someone regarding animals. I don't believe animals should be considered mere property because animals are an emotional part of our lives. They aren't just a piece of property. Their lives aren't replaceable. We may be able to get another animal but one animal can't replace another any more than one child can replace another. They all have unique personalities.
Thanks for the support, though. I appreciate it.

Very true....I see what you are saying. It's just that it is so frustrating when these kind of accidents happen, and they usually occur because of someone's carelessness, or somthing of that sort. And our pets are part of our families, and I would definitely like to see the laws changed to where the people or companies that cause these kinds of problems are held accountable one way or another. (I hope that makes sense, because I am VERY sleepy as I am typing this. LOL).

Thank God, I haven't lost either of my cats to tainted pet food. My cats eat Friskies and are most fond of that brand's turkey giblets.
Hearing that story just made my blood run cold. Even one cat dying from tainted food is one too many, and yes, I do believe that existing laws should be enforced for our cats' protection.

I feed my babies Friskies as well but their favorite is the Tuna and Egg. Snowball comes running every time he thinks I might give him canned food. And, if I run the can opener, I end up with a sea of cats around my legs because they think I'm giving them Tuna. I do that once in a great while but not often because it isn't good for them.
I'm glad your cats are alright.
Regarding existing laws, there really aren't any to protect animals/pets. The only laws that exist are abuse laws but that doesn't include laws dealing with people who threaten to harm animals for whatever reason. As far as I'm concerned, blackmail is blackmail and whether it involves money or a person or an animal, it shouldn't be allowed.

Fortunately my cats are okay. I agree with you that pets are not "property." They are my family. Living things are not property. But even if they were, I agree with one of your other commenters that pet owners should be able to be compensated the way they would for any other property. Not that I think people should rush out and sue, but we might want to take a look at how pet food is regulated and make sure that the regulations are stringent enough, as well as looking at other laws to make sure our pets are protected.
I'm sorry you went through that with your neighbor, and glad that you don't have to worry about her anymore. I'm glad you got your cats back.

Fortunately my dogs and cats both eat dry food, so I have not had any sick from this mess either. But, with that being said, I think that there should be someway for these owners who have lost their pets to at least get vet bills paid. Either way it is a sad situation considering the fact that these owners thought they were doing what was best for their animals by feeding them reputable food.
