The bible is where the golden rule comes from "do unto others, as you would have others do unto you" - and it says things like "pick up your cross and follow me" which part of that is to cease to put your own interests us topmost... And actuallly there's a sort of "forget yourself" which is actually very freeing! Just think if all people considered others first, putting other's needs and concerns above one's own [that works especially good among a married couple.] I like to say that in the world to come (the paradise restored by Jesus) will be "ruled by love" and of course the bible says "God is love". On the other hand the bible also says to "love your neighbor as you love yourself" so it's kool to like ourselves, as well as others. But no need to make my own interests top priority..

There are hundreds of scriptures that teach us God #1, everyone else we are to treat the same, equal, to ourselves. Also we are to "suffer" and share in Christ's suffering to share God's word with others.
Pro 12:26 A righteous person looks out for his neighbor, but the path of wicked people leads others astray.
Mar 12:31 The second most important commandment is this: 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these."
Luk 10:27 He answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind.' And 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.'"
Act 20:35 I have given you an example that by working hard like this we should help the weak. We should remember the words that the Lord Jesus said, 'Giving gifts is more satisfying than receiving them.'"
Rom 12:8 If it is encouraging others, devote yourself to giving encouragement. If it is sharing, be generous. If it is leadership, lead enthusiastically. If it is helping people in need, help them cheerfully.
1Ti 4:13 Until I get there, concentrate on reading Scripture in worship, giving encouraging messages, and teaching people.
Rom 8:17 If we are his children, we are also God's heirs. If we share in Christ's suffering in order to share his glory, we are heirs together with him.
1Co 12:26 If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts share its suffering. If one part is praised, all the others share in its happiness.
2Ti 1:8 So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord or be ashamed of me, his prisoner. Instead, by God's power, join me in suffering for the sake of the Good News.
p.s. this is the third time I've tried to post this, praying it goes this time.
