Fashion faux pas? Should you wear white before Memorial Day?

Meredith Viera - Wearing white before Memorial Day
United States
March 22, 2007 1:42pm CST
Meredith Viera, co-host apparently, upset many viewers yesterday when she wore white slacks yesterday on the air. Viera proudly wore her white slacks in celebration of the first day of spring. However she was inundated with emails and calls from viewers telling her about her violation of the rules for wearing white. I actually liked her outfit she wore yesterday and was not offended by her wearing the white pants. What do you think? Do you follow the "rules for wearing white only between Memorial Day and labor Day? Do you ignore these fashion rules?

Hi there, I have to say that I do not wear white often because I think it makes me look too fat. But, I see the winter whites and I think they look wonderful. Not wearing white before Memorial Day went out a few years ago as far as I know. I am no fashion diva, I'm a jeans and tee/sweat shirt kind of gal! I think white is fine whenever you want to wear it. In fact, I need to shed a few pounds so that I can wear white this summer and I am definately going to think of wearing it for Christmas 2007! Nice discussion, take care!

I think that this fashion rule needs to be updated. It is an oldie but not a goodie. I say wear what you look and feel good in.

I think it is dumb. We sorta of go by Easter here in the south for wearing white. You don't bring out the white shoes until after Easter. I wore white capris today so I guess I'm BAD! Oh well, I really don't care! I wore what I wanted and was comfortable to boot!

Fashion rules like that are made to be broken. I didn't think that anyone still felt that way. The only reason I don't wear white before Memorial Day is the same reason I never wear white. My kids would stain it before it was on for an hour.

I've never heard of only wearing white between Memorial day and Labor Day. I've always been taught 'Between Easter and Labor Day' All my life that's been the rule, Easter Sunday has always been the day to pull out the white shoes and purse.

I think thats a dumb rule and I don't follow it. I wore white pants the other day and no one cared including me. I wear what I want when I want and I don't think that people should worry so much about what others think of what they're wearing.

Yes, I ignore the rules. I wear what I want when I want. I don't really understand why this rule was even started. But I am my own person and if I feel like wearing white, I will wear white.

I don't know why viewers were upset, that is silly. I love white jeans, slacks, shorts, shirts, shoes. I would wear them anytime I was in the mood, I don't usually wear them in the winter, but I wear off white or a similar color. I'm not a huge fan of Meredith, but I'd say "you go girl"! We are breaking rules these days anyway, I can't think of a better one to break than this, LOL.

pfffft to the fashion police, I wear what I have when I want and could care less if I break fashion rules, Are they the same rules that also tell women that if they are more than 5 pounds overweight they are FAT. I thought this went out years ago, I know there was a large department store that would not allow its employees to wear short sleeves from Sept to the end of April, no matter what the weather was like out side,Sorry I dress for comfort never for the dictates of fashion.

Personally, I never really understood that "rule". Who cares what one wears, as long as it matches to a certain degree and looks good?

I've never understood why people come up with these as*inine rules for themselves. Who cres if it's not before memorial day and labor day? I say wear whatever you're comfortable in, and if someone doesn't like it, that's their problem, not yours.
