This is kind of strange

For the last two years, we have been trying to get my son equipment that he needed to help him learn and get around! We finally have gotten all we have been trying for. It all came within the last 3 weeks. Three weeks ago, on the same day, he received his talking device, and touch screen monitor for a computer. Today, he has gotten his Power wheelchair, and a brand new computer. I am so glad he has it all now. It just seems funny that for 2 years we could not get anything and now we get it all in 3 weeks time. He should be in heaven. Isn't it funny how some things just fall into place all at the same time? We will definitely be busy!!

I know how you feel. It was like that for us, getting support, funding, and therapy. For years I couldn't even get a diagnosis for my son ... and every day was a struggle. Now, there are actually weeks when I look back and think, 'That was actually a GOOD week' ... becuase we finally have the support we need. It just goes to show you - don't gve up pushing and advocating for what your child needs ... because eventually it comes. It feels a lot like that last piece of the puzzle going into place.

It seems like such a long time coming. I have learned to talk the Drs. into getting some things he is going to need before he needs it. That way when we do, it is hear because it takes so long to get. When my son was 8 he was 50 lbs. and was easy to get around. In 3 months he gained 35 lbs. because of medication. We needed some things to help us in the bathroom and around the house. It took 6 months. We were in a mess.

Wow, finally your son gets the equipment he needs - fantastic, you must all be so excited! How is he getting on with the speaking machine, you said it was a big help and he was getting better at using it before. The touch screen must be brilliant for him too. I cannot even begin to imagine how much a power wheelchair will help you all on trips out. Have fun with his new gadgets, thay should make life easier too.

We finally have started getting everything done on the device and we can't get him to put it up. Even at bedtime he has a fit. I am really trying to enforce the fact that it is not a toy and make him tell me what he wants and tell me things with it. It just is really cool and going to take a little while to really understand that he can talk to us.

That is so wonderful! I'm so happy for your son and your family, it will all make such a difference for him! He has *got* to be in heaven seeing all the new possibilities opening up for him and bringing him a whole new world. Kinda funny how it all came at the same time...the wheels of bureaucracy go really slow sometimes, don't they?! Much happiness to you and your family thoroughrob!

It's nice to hear that your son finally got the equipment he needed so badly. It should make life so much easier for him and the whole family. It was a shame it took so long, but at least he finally got it. I know some of what you've been going through since my niece had many of the same problems with getting aid and assistance with her son who is now 11 and has muscular dystrophy, autism and some mental retardation. It's a rough road to go down for all concerned. God bless you and your family.

I don't know why they think they need to make things hard for us, don't they think we have enough to deal with? I would love to let one of them take over for just a day, when they start giving us a hard time. Good luck to your neice and if I can be of any help let me know.

I have never understood how insurance companies can even think to wait so long to approve a much needed piece of equipment for someone. They need to realize that the equipment will improve a persons life. It should be a no brainer when it comes to this. In my previous job, I received so many denials for equipment that would have improve a patients life. Many times the parents or patients would give up. Not me. I would get their permission to proceed with the prior approval and fight tooth and nail for them. Often times it would get approved.

Why should we have to fight? We have enough on our plates. It seems like all I do is deal with Ins. and Medicaid, schools, Drs. and therapists. I spend at least 8 hours a week dealing with one of them. I think the parents just give up. They have to use their energy concentrating on the patient and they are just drained. There are times when I just have to put things on hold just to keep my sanity. It is so nice that you kept persuing for them.

I'm so happy you've finally found the resources and ability to get him what he needs. It's difficult to help any child learn without the proper tools, with or without disabilities. Good luck with your new toys and have fun learning with him!

Some people believe that God won't give us any more then we can handle ... I think that everything in this world tells us that it's not true. I believe that God gives us much more then we can handle so that we are forced to rely not on our own strength, but on His strength. I think He's blessed you with the arrival of all of your son's equipment at just the right time. I'm sure that you will be busy putting everything together, but in the end it will be so worth it. Congratulations!
