Does Anyone Own a Cane Corso?

We had one that we rescued from a shelter several years ago, a brindle without his tail and ears cut.
This dog was the strongest animal I have ever seen, an excellent tracker and natural guard. I'm used to dealing with very strong and very unruly dogs from my years as a dog trainer of working breeds (mostly), but this animal could drag a stout grown man (or three) across the yard effortlessly.
Unfortunately, ours was poisoned and died as a result, so we were unable to spend much time with him.
I'm thinking of acquiring another dog soon, either a German Shepherd, Mastiff, another Rottweiler (have none now but used to own several), or Cane Corso. What has been your experience with Cane Corso? Are they "overbred" in America? Too many in need of rescue? Do they present unique challenges?
Thank you for your input.

I like dogs but I never like to keep them and I have little knowledge about dogs. Your discussion about cane corso is quite interesting and I have learnt a lot from you about dogs. Oh great! I have never thought that you are an expert of dog training. Since cane corso is such a wonderful dog why not you keep one?

Hi lkbooi,
I do not consider myself an expert on dogs at all...there is always something new to learn, and other training methods to consider as well.
Cane Corso's are basically Mastiffs - Italian Mastiffs to be exact. Here in America (I dont know where you are actually) some breeds are not allowed in certain areas, or you cannot get homeowner insurance if you own a certain breed. I don't agree with this at all.
Anyway, I was hoping to find some who have both positive and negative experiences with Cane Corso before I choose another dog.
I would be interested to know if they are a "fad" in America and being overbred currently (like German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Golden Retrievers, etc all were at one time). When this happens, there are way too many animals for people to care for, unfortunately.
Thank you for your kind response. :)

Cane Corsos are growing in popularity, but due to their high prices there still considered a rare breed. They are wonderfull companions, but do require early socilization(to prevent over aggressivness), and obedinece training. They are though highly trainable, and when raised right will exceed your expectaions of a household companion. If you are going to purchse one, research reputable breeders there prices will be higher, but there dogs will be sound. A good breeder will have their hips tested, and a good genetic backround. Look up the CCAA it will have some good information on Corsos.
