What's so bad about the US?

March 23, 2007 2:29pm CST
I get fed up sometimes with the negative images portrayed in the media about the contribution the US makes to society. the US is often portrayed in a negative light, poking their noses where there not required. My personal experience of the US has been positive having visted the country twice and to date I have yet to meet the stereotypical "Arrogant American" that is often portrayed. I would accept that the IRAQ war has not endeared either the US or United Kingdom to other countries and personally I did not agree with the reasons behind the current invasion, but there are many more positive contributions made by America. Many European countries would simply not exist without the US intervention in the seond world war and the US contribution to science, in particular cancer research is second to none. I just feel that the US does get a rought deal sometimes and perhaps it's more to do with other countires being envious of it's achievements.

I first want to thank youfor your comments salted. it s good to hear some posative out there. I think alot of it is ignorance and what the worlds media feeds its people. I just barely finished a comment to a post in a thread about a girl who wants to move here. One person asked her why she wanted to move here. She then proceeded to tell her how hard life was here. How expensive it was. How high the taxes were. That kids have to move out at 18. That parents dont help their children when they move oput, The list goes on. It actualy kinda hurt to read it. No wonder the world hates us. I wonder now what other mis conceptions are out there about us.

As human beings there will always be some who need to knock down others in order to inflate their own ego. It's a shame when people don't look at both sides of the coin and it's important to be balanced in any opinions that we give or alternatively ask someone to provide a different perspective if we feel we can't be balanced. I agree it's sad when you here people slating other people or countries as nowhere is perfect. Great response, that's for posting

I agree 100% with this- Look at all the good we do for all the other countries.. Who is the first country to help when someone needs it? Thats us the USA.. Who gives out money when we could use it here in the states? The USA.. Sure there are alot of arrogant Americans-- Aren't there alot of arrogant people in every country? I don't think we should still be in Iraq-- only because so many of our soldiers are losing their lives-- But we are still there trying to make Iraq a better place for the non-terrorists. I say God Bless the USA-- and I'd like to see alot more positive news!

fair point the US does give alot of money to humanitarian causes and because it's such a big country this has a major impact.

I have to agree. I get very tired of the "bad rap" the United States gets from other countries and even it's own citizens. I too am not in total agreement with the war, and I certainly think Bush is a "bleep". But, the US is still my country, it is the home of the free, the proud, and the brave. We do more for other countries and come to their aid faster than we do that of our people. A little appreciation would be nice.

I totally agree with your comments and I agree the US is often the first to respond to humanitarian crises.

Well, I think it is wrong and dangerous to stereotyope any race or country. Of course, there are lots of good Americans, who are decent people, and I have lots of friends from the States and have been there quite a few times. However, I have to say I have also met many of the stereotypical "arrogant Americans" who think nothing and nowhere exists outside of their country, and that little old Europe or wherever could not survide without them. And - frankly, I hate that attitude and think it is pure bulls***! Maybe the fact that my Mother was Russian (which always gives me entry/Visa problems into the States) hasn't helped my personal views, plus also the fact that my partner is from South America and there is a lot of racism in the States against Hispanic people hasn't helped either. I try to take every individual on their mertis though - and of course there are good and bad everywhere.

I agree it's so easy to dismiss a whole nation as arrogant but what actually matters is that each person is viewed on an individual basis
