Earth without a moon?

I just read an interesting article, that there at one time was no moon. Some of the ancient greek historians and philosophers wrote about a civilization that existed before the earth had a moon. Where does the moon come from and how long has it been orbiting the earth? I think that is an interesting question and something worth searching the answer for.
