I am in the process of writing my own novel however the way I have learned from other people who have actually done it is they told me "write smaller items first". What he meant when he told me that is to write a 20-25 page report style thing and try and sell it to the world, if they like it then write something bigger such as an e-book if people still like it then you can always get an ISBN for the e-book and then you could sell that to a publisher. Instead the way him and partner did it was they went through all of the red tape in the beginning instead of just getting their publications out there to the world.

I am writing my second novel. I am in the editing stages. My first novel I thought was finished but have learned so much since then. I know I have to go back and do some major revisions. The second novel is much better than the first and hopefully will be a great seller. I also write short stories and poetry. I am considering writing a non-fiction book on my life with fibromyalgia. What I am no good at is writing articles... at least I don't think so. I guess responses to discussions could be considered articles to some extent.

I've always wanted to write a novel. I am well-read and love writing of all kinds. However, I can never seem to come up with an interesting, cohesive plot. My dialogue and characters are strong, but I can never figure out what they want to do. Anyone have any good plot ideas but problems with characters and dialogue? Sometimes if I want a stronger plot, I look at my characters to see what their fears are and plunge them in to face it or create a conflict with one of the other characters that doesn't appear to be connected with the story, but if possible tie it all in together. Sometimes just creating a past between two characters opens all kinds of doors. I have one character that became a mother and adopted her child out to her parents and had to face the child's father. When she started out just being an older sister to a change of life baby.

I am interested in writing a novel, particularly a children's novel that deals with bullying, the environment, friendship, the value of education, and love. I've read very little Asian literature. Are there any books or authors you would recommend? You say you have writing experience with working for a newspaper company. A novel is possible for you. You just have to set very concrete details about it. What type of novel do you want? How many hours a day can you and will you dedicate to writing? Are you publishing in the right market? Are your plots, characters multi-faceted or conventional?(even though conventional characters aren't often bad...too many writers feel as if they need to create characters who are often so deep that the entire work starts feeling contrived) Sorry for the long-winded post, but it's the writer in me. Happy writing, wm69love88!

Well I wrote few stories when I was 10 years old. I was very fond of drawing at that time. One of my hobbies were writing my comics and own stories. It was all done for fun. I wrote my own spiderman comics and own adventure stories. I gave my comics and stories for my family and friends to read. When I was 12 I wrote a story with another friend. It really brings me laughs when I see them now. It was great fun but the themes in the book didn't have any depth or message. It was the normal catch the bad guy story. I wrote a short story recently which got published in the local paper. Currently I don't have any plans about writing a novel.

yes I have considered that. and it's hard to get published. so mypublisher online is a good alternative. they can publish in small quantums. so you get to see your book in print. but to really stand the test, have to get published for the masses. i admire kiran desai. her book that won the booker prize rocks!

I wrote a novel in 1997 and lost 50 pages of it, along with all of my edits, in 1998. It really stifled my ability to start over again . . . and it taught me to back up all of my files better. I'm thinking about starting another one, with a different plot, in the cominhg weeks. I started a discussion similar to this, as well, about outlining.

Yup, I write at least one novel a year, during November. So far, I have around 6 or so novels, plot-wise; but one of my novels is already 33 books long, so I don't know how to count that (haha) I've also published two of the novels, and it's great to receive reviews - because you know that people actually read your work! If you want to write novels, just go ahead and write! Let your imagination loose - oh, and try out http://www.nanowrimo.org. That will really push you to write a novel.

I like to write fiction. I've been working on a couple of mystery novels. I had one finished, but lost part of it in a computer crash so I have to rewrite about six chapters. So always back up your work! :)

Yup, and i've actually been working on it since last two years ago. I just couldn't finish it yet coz' I believe i'm yet to learn more and I have to experience more things in order for me to finish it. Hopefully in 5 years.. i'd be able to publish my own book, which has always been one of my goals and dreams ;)

I did try in college, after college and up to the time I got employed full-time. However, my attempts were futile. I never really had time to sit down and let my imagination run. Corporate jobs can really suck out every little energy left in me.
