Growing up in California, and now livng on the Irish coast, I have always collected shells. In college, I took a geography class and got into collecting stones, too. Do you collect these things and if so, what do you do with them? I have a rock tumbler and we like to display the polished stones and shells in decorative jars. They also make nice gifts and momentos for people that come to visit. What about you?

I don't personnaly collect shells or stones but my wife and grandchildren collect them. My wife likes to comb the beaches and look for nice stones that she can put into the aquarium with the tropical fish and I would often help her to look for them. She once collected tons of shells and I helped her to cement them to the garden wall at the back of the house. It looked very decorative and made a pleasant change instead of the climbing plants that we have on our other walls.

I also have a rock tumbler. But I must admit, it's been a long time since Ihave used it. I'm a bit impatient so it's hard for me to wait for the tumbler to be done! ;-) But I love collecting interesting stones. Whenever I travel I try to find a nice stone to being home as a momento of the trip. Some of the nicest ones are on display and others are in a bag waiting for me to get inspired to do something with them. If I am lucky enough to find some kind of gem stone, (in the area I live it's mostly quartz) I like to learn more about it's properties, both physical and metaphysical. I would love to do more crafts with stones, but I'm not sure what to do. I would welcome any idea you have. I've got a lot od stones around :-)

We have a lot of quartz around here as well, some really pretty rose quartz. Once I have them polished I put them in glass jars as gifts, as an alternative to candy in candy dishes (always surprises the kiddies!), and they are also nice additions to fish tanks or as a top dressing for potted plants. I hope we get some more responses, too, because I could also use some fresh ideas!

I have been collecting alot of shells and stones lately. Hubby and I have a boat in Dana Point Harbor and there is a beach on either side of the marina. I haven't tried tumbling the shells/stones yet, although I do have a tumbler I bought for my polymer clay beads. I picked shells and stones that I could incorporate in my jewelry designs, just haven't gotten started on tumbling yet. www.bibelots.etsy.com - come and see what I have so far. I am making new stuff all the time, and I cheerfully take special orders with a smile! :-D

I used to - with my Mum. But we both grew out of it. Shells or pebbles that can be found in Singapore are not really that exotic. LOL :P

When I lived in NJ I tried to collect shells but they were hard to find in good condition. I would see mostly big shells on the beach and they would most likely be broken. Sea glass, of course was pretty abundant. Now I'm in FL and there are lots of small, beautiful shells to be found, though I must admit I am getting hooked on finding and collecting sharks' teeth. I don't have a large collection, but I keep them in clear jars in the bathroom and in other jars that I burn candles in. I like to try to figure out what kind of shark the tooth came from.
