Hi MKpack22,
I don't know if I'd agree that dogs are cheaper than alarm systems. Our monthly feed bill gets pretty expensive. Although, our motley crew is a tad spoiled.
I will say that I am thoroughly convinced that our crew of canines is the reason why we've never had an intruder. I live in a very rural area. Even so, many of our neighbors have been robbed. We have remained free of such incident. Knock on wood. And, I'm sure that it's because of the dogs. They look and sound scary ... of course they're all a bunch of muush muffins. But, their appearance and alarming barks keep others at bay. We have five dogs currently. If we had only one or two I doubt they would be as much of a deterrent. With five, there are enough to roam and keep track of the entire property.
So, when I get to feeling like I'd like to complain about the feed bill, I remember the great job they do of keeping the property safe. Lots of pets and ball throwing to show my appreciation for their hard work soon follows.

I wanted to add this because I think it's very relevant.
We have a dog door, so that the dogs can enter and leave the home at will. This is relevant because, if a burglar sees a dog tied to a dog house or restrained in a pen or run, it is no deterrent at all. They need only get around the dog to rob the house.
This creates it's own set of problems. It means that the property has to be fully fenced, and secured. Meaning that the dogs must not be allowed to jump over or dig under the fence.
Dogs are alot of responsibility. A chained dog has a greater likelihood of becoming aggressive and unstable. An escape artist dog will keep you up at night worrying if he or she gets out and doesn't come home.
Our furry four-legged friends require a true commitment. There's bonding, training, exercising, playing, chewed household objects, vet bills, etc... So, if you're just looking for theft deterrence and protection, an alarm may be a better choice.
The animal shelters are full of dogs that were gotten by their owners for all the wrong reasons, and where the humans were unwilling to make the necessary commitment. Please consider this carefully, so that you don't become another example of the same.
If you do decide that you're willing to take on the responsibility ... happy trails to you and your new four-legged friend!
