Hi.Despite my profession(mechanical engineer),I am not able to use Autocad for design. In my professional life,I prefer using old versions of CADKEY,Key Creator,Solidworks,Edgecam,Unigraphics and Catia mostly.Especially Catia and Solidworks are rather beneficial for 3D applications. If you want to use with CNC coder,Edgecam can be preferred. My brother uses Autocad for 2D drawings of HVAC projects.

AutoCAD is pretty much used for standard blueprints mostly architectual at that. Most companies have their own preferences as to use for machining. GM uses unigraphics, there is catia, autosketch and tons of others that alot of different companies use. I have used both AutoCAD and unigraphics and for 3d modelling I have to say unigraphics beats AutoCAD hands down.
